hot take but paragon is a weird fic. i tried to read it months ago, and couldn’t get past literally the very beginning when hannibal is testing will for an STD while will is literally unconscious. if i remember correctly, it’s because he wants to figure out how to sleep with will, so he’s making sure will is clean, so the whole thing just feels really fucking gross. hannibal is weird, unhinged, curious, and power hungry -and a plethora of other things- but he isn’t a sexual deviant/rapist. there’s no way around it, what hannibal does to will in that fic is rape/sexual assault. an unconscious person cannot consent. you cannot convince me that hannibal wouldn’t be the type of partner in ANY universe and in ANY setting that wouldn’t want complete consent from a sexual partner, ESPECIALLY will. crossing that line is one of THE most important aspects of their relationship for SO many reasons, and i know paragon isn’t post fall, but honestly…that just makes it worse. you also can’t convince me that in ANY universe and in ANY setting that will would be okay with that. this is entirely out of character for both of them. i know that canonically, hannibal was lying to alana about his true self, but there’s SO many reasons why he was doing that that aren’t just straight up for his own ego, and i really hope that i don’t have to sit here and explain that i can both understand his reasonings, and disagree with his actions. not to mention, there’s a difference between hiding a very dark part of himself from someone who would be terrified of him -rightly so- and misunderstand him, vs what he does in paragon. i’m not trying to yuck anybody’s yum here, just stating my opinion cause i see that fic being hyped up way too much for my liking, especially when there are COUNTLESS other fics out that that are so so beautifully written, and deserve more attention.

valid!! you should probably check my replies in the comments though before you reply with something i’ve basically already said.

  1. time-official said: so… rec the fics you *do* like then…? kinda weird you trashed a popular fic and said there’s so many other better fics but linked… none of them. you’re entitled to say whatever online but so is everyone else :/
  2. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @spxcecreature yeah, i have my opinions. and my negative ones i keep OUT OF THE MAIN TAGS. be an entitled asshole about how SOMEONE ELSE wrote A CANNIBAL MURDERER all you want–DONT TAG IT WITH ALL THE MAIN HANNIBAL TAGS. It’s “not that deep” to have some level of critical thinking and decorum and go “huh…this might affect the author. maybe i’ll just tag it with my personal blog vent tag” rather than broadcasting it to the entire Hannibal fandom. Newsflash: I’m not part of fandom to bully authors by criticizing their hobby.
  3. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @spxcecreature yeah again, it actually is. general fandom etiquette says it is. general fandom etiquette is that you do not share criticism unless an author specifically states that they want you to. ask pretty much anyone and they’ll probably agree with me–and people like you are why more and more authors are turning comments off or limiting them because y'all share this shit in main tags or in comments and destroy authors’ confidence.
  4. darth-cervix said: @spxcecreature cool, I won’t be doing that since you’re like a brick wall. Learn to be less chronically online.
  5. twoturtlesinabathtub said: @spxcecreature Bestie…you said “more than positive”. I’m not making this up. You’re talking in circles, and still not understanding my original point, and I’m sure we’re both tired of it. I don’t envy you. Do what you want, regardless of what damage you might cause, I guess. You certainly seem hellbent enough on it.
  6. darth-cervix said: LMAOO you’re literally putting words in my mouth, it’s a matter of not liking a fic and moving on. You had to put their whole fic on blast full name and everything. Grow the fuck up. As someone who has been victimized I don’t like those themes as much as the next person but I also don’t make posts about it like a toddler
  7. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @spxcecreature also we’re saying “don’t like don’t read” because it’s so easy to just??? Hit a back button??? And keep it to yourself??? Nobody would be arguing with you if you had A) tagged this post in a way that main Hannibal fans/the author couldn’t find it (i.e only tagged it with your personal vent tag) or B) vented this in private to someone and not posted this altogether. The issue is NOT that you disliked the fic. I don’t care whether you liked it or not, it’s valid that you didn’t like it and didn’t finish reading it. The ISSUE IS you posted this long rant about what you disliked about what the author did, in THE MAIN TAGS, WITH THE FIC TITLE PROMINENTLY STATED, and that is HORRID fandom etiquette, incredibly entitled, and extraordinarily rude to that author. I’ve started plenty of really hyped fics in my fandoms that I did not like and did not finish, and I had strong opinions about WHY i did not like these fics, but I kept them to myself and moved on because I recognized that the author made work they loved and that’s all that matters to me. The author doesn’t need to know if you don’t like it; they only need to hear from you if you have something nice to say. They literally do not get paid to hear criticism.
  8. twoturtlesinabathtub said: @spxcecreature I’m glad you realized your mistake. You shouldn’t make assumptions like that. I, however, didn’t make an assumption—that’s why I used the word “might”. And regardless of whether or not you think I’m personally projecting, you missed the entire point of what I was saying from the beginning. Venting’s fine. Hell, I’ve talked with my friends about fics and characterizations that really aren’t my cup of tea. The thing I was saying from the start was it’s about the place. I bitch in Discord and private DMs. I do not disparage someone else’s work in a public format—and I especially wouldn’t give it fandom tags so complete strangers could see it. My guess is you either wanted validation, or you just want to start something—but hey, I won’t make assumptions. If you can’t understand why you were being rude as hell, then that’s on you.
  9. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @spxcecreature speak for yourself, i would find it perfectly enjoyable as a reader to read about hannibal being a rapist. I watched the show and I’ve read the books and seen Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal is methodical, calculated, obsessive, and VERY adept at masking his crimes/criminal nature. ALL of these traits could VERY EASILY feed into him raping Will or someone else. I don’t think his thought process would be “I’m going to rape Will to hurt him/because it makes me feel good” but I DO think Hannibal has NO LINES on his curiosity, and I think his thought process would be “I’m going to push the boundaries of Will’s consent to see what he does and how far he will let me go.” He essentially does EXACTLY THAT through canon, just with murder and cannibalism rather than rape. It’s fine if you don’t want the villain of the franchise to be a villain, and everyone’s entitled to their characterizations. Because everyone’s entitled to their characterizations, there can be multiple at once. Just because YOU don’t see Hannibal as being capable of rape doesn’t mean the AUTHOR cannot WRITE him as a rapist. Whining about an author characterizing a villain in a way you don’t like is immature and entitled. Hannigram is in its canon form a very toxic ship, it makes perfect sense that fandom would want to explore that and make it even more toxic.
  10. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @spxcecreature listen, i write dead dove all the time. I know people are gonna hate it. HOWEVER, fanfic is NOT like published books. Published authors essentially sign a contract that literary critics can say whatever negative things they like. FANFIC is part of FANDOM. Fandom is SUPPOSED to be a fun hobby space. Authors do not post on ao3 looking for critique. Fanfic is a hobby, from the heart, freely shared, and the GENERAL FANDOM ETIQUETTE is to NOT SAY ANYTHING IF YOU HAVE NOTHING NICE TO SAY. Unfortunately your post is in the main tags, meaning the author has a higher chance of seeing it, and I sincerely hope they can move past seeing a long whining nitpick post about their fic. I don’t care if you disliked it. The author is another human being with feelings that deserve to be considered, and you stomped all over them by “expressing your dislike.”
  11. twoturtlesinabathtub said: That’s a lot of words all to say you’re projecting and making some pretty ridiculous assumptions about other people and how they’ll react. The “bullshit” is your pulling a stunt like this—it’s just a confirmation that, like I said, it’s doubtful you can be helped. I’m finished here—I don’t enjoy speaking to brick walls. Have a good day.
  12. darth-cervix said: @spxcecreature If it’s not that deep then don’t put the person’s work on blast. Honestly I wish more people learned to shut the fuck up sometimes, because clearly you’re being a bully for sport
  13. twoturtlesinabathtub said: @spxcecreature I’ve seen authors who’ve come across people publicly disparaging their hard work, and it was such a blow to their self-esteem that they gave up and/or deleted/orphaned their fics. That’s a human person you’re insulting, not just words on a screen. If you can’t see why being empathetic and considerate is important here, then I really don’t think you can be helped.
  14. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @fevers-and-emeto-oh-my Also…this is not hannibal meta??? don’t put wank like this in the main tags. don’t post wank like this at all? the author doesn’t need to hear your critiques and get discouraged. if you want to critique something critique canon, not fanfic someone wrote out of love and shared with you for free
  15. twoturtlesinabathtub said: How self-entitled do you have to be to publicly whine about how you don’t like something a fan made for free? Don’t like, don’t read. The author might see this, and it would make them feel shitty. Try to have some empathy here and keep your negativity about a fanwork off of a public platform. Fanfic isn’t a show or a book, and it isn’t “content"—it’s completely unnecessary to be rude about someone’s passion that they’re sharing for free.
  16. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: @fevers-and-emeto-oh-my Also….we see Hannibal disrespect/manipulate/not ask for consent multiple times in canon. Sticking Abigail’s ear down Will’s throat, for example. There are definitely in-character ways where Hannibal’s obsession could escalate to dubcon/noncon
  17. fevers-and-emeto-oh-my said: I think Hannibal could totally be characterized to be a rapist. I think any character could. If you don’t like the fic that’s valid but don’t post a critique on it online like this when the author doesn’t deserve that
  18. thatonecrustysock said: ive sincerely never heard of this fanfic until now but reading about this made me audibly go “wtf?”
