I think that the people who are disappointed in Hugh’s answers are new to the fandom and really don’t know him and how he operates and communicates. It’s the only explanation to this ridiculous circus.
Because he’s acknowledged the love and romance between Hannibal and Will many times in the past. The uniqueness of their love. He did that in serious interviews. Just go through the dozens of interviews he’s done through the years and you’ll see. I’m not going to do the homework for you. I’ve been here long enough to know he ships Hannigram and that his acting and collaboration on the show are the actual reason we have some of the most romantic and beautiful scenes on the show.
Also, Hugh loves to take the mick. He’s sarcastic and ironic and on the other hand, can sometimes be very literal in the way he expresses himself (e.g. explaining what he meant by Platonic love, he meant it in the philosophical way).
He won’t say what you’d like to hear. He’s British after all. Moreover, British actors are not famous for doing fan service, quite on the contrary. (PS: if you come from the Johnlock fandom, you know what I mean).
This is a man who was speaking to someone at a Halloween party and that person was dressed as a Pokémon and he pretended he didn’t know what Pokémon was. For the duration of the conversation. Simply to take the mick. He also lied and said he didn’t know the ship was called Hannigram and that he had never read fanfics. Only for Mads Mikkelsen to later tell a fan “he’s a liar, he sends me Hannigram fics all the time”.
He knows what y’all want to hear and he won’t give you that because he’s British, he’s sarcastic, and his personality is not that of fan service. So get over it.
He collaborated and acted beautifully on the show knowing what he was conveying with his scenes: “it’s beautiful”, putting Mads Mikkelsen’s hands around his waist, looking lovingly into Mads’ eyes… those were all his choices because he was conveying the love Will felt for Hannibal. That’s that.
I feel that all this hate towards hugh for his answers for Boston comic-con panel is quite irrational. Hugh never denies existence of Hannigram. Hugh said it will take will 7 seasons to be in love with Hannibal in a jocular manner. It’s inevitable, not impossible. He means that it will take Will a lot of time to trust Hannibal and be in love with him and I find his point very valid. Like you expect will Graham to propose to Hannibal after attempting suicide?
Further, if you guys disagree with hugh why don’t you see that it’s his opinion and thus his head canon. Can he not have those for the character he played? For hannigram all you need to know is information from bryan fuller. That is the only opinion that is canonically valid. No matter what mads or hugh says. Bryan is the creator. So refer to information by him instead of hating or being angry over somebody’s opinions.

To be honest, I don’t think Hugh was denying Hannigram. If I understood you correctly, you must be talking about that one question where Hugh jokingly said that it would take seven seasons for Will to love Hannibal. 😅 Now, it’s important to understand that even actors have their own interpretation of their art, but it doesn’t change the canon. In the show, we already know that Will DOES love Hannibal; otherwise, his actions wouldn’t make any sense.
Regarding the seasons, the initial plans were to make seven seasons, but it got cut down to six or maybe five, so you can’t really say that Hugh was serious about it. This man has been faithful to Bryan and his vision, and that’s why he is careful while answering any Hannigram-related questions. However, he was and is supportive of this ship. There are interviews where he says that it’s a love story and that they both love each other. Also, don’t forget he collaborated on a lot of scenes, so he very much knew what was being portrayed.
My advice is don’t take actors’ words too seriously. If someday Mads comes and says that Hannibal is not a cannibal (sorry), would you agree? No, right? Because the text doesn’t support that. So, it’s the same thing with whatever Hugh said.

I read this quote from @folie-a-deux post - so I haven’t seen the panel. I haven’t heard the tone or seen the mannerism. And to be honest I don’t watch interviews regarding Hannibal much at all anyway

The phrase “coming to terms with something within himself” is loaded. Now I’m sure he’s meaning that darkness. That instinct to maim or hunt or whatever it is that Hannibal saw from the beginning. I’m very much not a fan of the phrase “you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else”. I’ve always thought it was bullshit. I think that connecting to others, in turn, helps you connect with yourself. Figuring out why you’re drawn to certain people or songs or fictional characters can help you figure out the bits of yourself that you were too afraid to love on your own.
I agree with Hugh that loving Hannibal was not his focus. I can even agree that it’s not done consciously, not yet.
I believe that loving Hannibal is a byproduct of that “coming to terms” with himself. It’s scary but it’s comforting at the same time. But it’s there and it’s deep. Is it romantic? Sexual? I’m not sure. There’s no way Hannibal’s love isn’t, though I can see him feeling confused as well. The uncertainty or indefinability is part of what makes Mizumono so heartbreaking. Their misunderstanding of their own feelings as much as their misinterpretation of each other’s actions. They misread as much as they feel. Did either of them understand the implications of running away together?
I’m not sure. But I trust Fuller and I trust Mads and dammit I trust Dancy too.
I also have this random (maybe) hot take that Will and Hannibal definitely did not f/ck during that bit of lost time in TWOTL. There was still too much tension. Too much conflict. Had they released any of it, they would’ve lost that fight to the dragon. They need to be teetering on the edge with each other to lead the lives that they do. I think that feeds into what Mads was saying about the cat and mouse chase.
What would that mean for season 4? Again I don’t know, but goddamn I wanna find out what my old men are up to. Whether they acknowledge the love and the lust and the lifeline they’re tethered to or not.
