Sally Field told Hailee Steinfeld during Season 5 of Variety and PBS’ “Actors on Actors,” what it was like to be raised by two working-class actors, and how she got her own big break with the television show “Gidget.”

“Acting was in my zeitgeist, but also I knew that certainly the part of acting I knew was not fun,” Field said. “It was not a glamorous world.”

Since college for her was not an option, Field started taking auditions at a very young age.

“I went on interview after interview after meeting after meeting for the whole summer,” she said. “And at the end of the summer it was for a television series called ‘Gidget’ and I got it.”

The interview will air in its entirety on Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” Season 5, presented by The Venetian Las Vegas, which debuts on PBS SoCal on Jan. 3.
