Forum:Database merge part 2
I'm expecting the database merge to reach an important stage tomorrow, with the start of the renames of accounts that "lose" in a clash with a Wikia-global accounts. Those that needed to be changed on the Wikia-global side have now been renamed, so are ready for the final merge.
What this means to YOU
Hopefully nothing.
However, there are a few groups that may be affected.
Those with older accounts - because of the way that MediaWiki used to store passwords, some older users will have to reset their passwords. If you can't log in, but your userpage is still in place, then please use the "forgot password" link to reset your password.
Those whose username has been changed to Un-Username - This will be due to a clash with a Wikia-global account where that account is more active (or the uncyc account has less than 1000 edits).
You will be able to see if this applies to you because 1. you won't be able to log in as your original name, and 2. your userpage will have been moved to the new, prefixed name.
If you can't log in with the prefixed name either, then please use the "forgot password" link to reset your password.
Please contact Sannse if:
- You actually own the Wikia-global account too, but didn't get the email addresses matching in time,
- You would like to change your name from Un-Username to something else,
- You haven't got a valid email address in place, so can't reset your password,
- There are any other problems you need help with
Thanks, -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 21:07, July 6, 2015 (UTC)
- You advised us earlier that registering new user names would be disabled for four weeks, and I put up a Site Notice to un-logged-in users to that effect. Nevertheless, the User Creation Log, which returned to operation last month, shows that a trickle of people are ignoring the warning and picking user names anyway, with total success. It strikes me that this upcoming phase would not require new logins to be disabled. Has the earlier warning been overtaken by events? Spıke 🎙️01:18 7-Jul-15
- It's more that we've been overtaken by unexpected delays. We are trying to get this done, but it's a slow and awkward process.
- We've now got to the stage where renames are being done here, as well as changes to user ID numbers so that the final merge can take place. So this is the stage where we need there to be no new accounts being created and so the account creation system is now off. The current estimate for the end of this stage is just over two weeks -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 16:21, July 7, 2015 (UTC)
- Ahhh. This makes much more sense now as to why I couldn't log in today. I'm just glad I had the presence of mind to link an email to my account a few years back. --PantsMacKenzie (talk) 20:12, July 23, 2015 (UTC)

- Pants! Always good to see your name. Even better to see your hair... unless you've cut it off. In which case I curse you and your spawn from time immemorial to the eventual and inevitable death of the Universe, and with it the MacKenzie clan. -- sannse<staff/> (talk) 23:02, July 23, 2015 (UTC)
- Still have the hair, Sannse, although it's started to recede a bit :/ Getting older, eh? --PantsMacKenzie (talk) 05:23, July 25, 2015 (UTC)

Complete!
Okay! The process should be complete now. New accounts can be created again, and you will be able to log on via any wikia or here as you have always done. If your account was merged, your wikia-global password will be the one to use.
We are seeing a few session errors, which means you log on in one place, and don't see yourself as logged in on the other. Until those stop, you can just re-log in one whichever side isn't showing correctly.
If any of the issues above show up for anyone, please let me know!
- Well - my Wikia signature preferences have now come over here, which is odd. The previous edit was signed by PuppyOnTheRadio, but he is too lazy to create a signature yet. 10:34 am 31 Jul 2015
- In fact, Wikia's code coolies seem to reset my skin preferences at least once a day, by way of giving me site messages with Great News on Wikia's many My Little Pony wikis. They occasionally disable my gadget preferences too, but have never turned off my signature. Spıke 🎙️13:08 31-Jul-15
- I still seem to have issues editing on iDevices, so no change there. PuppyOnTheRadio
- It is reassuring that there is something they did not break — although there is still plenty of time. Spıke 🎙️13:22 31-Jul-15

- Gah, yeah, Signatures are global, so your Wikia-global signature will work everywhere. It's not possible to have two signatures in the newly-shared preferences.
- One solution is to use your personal js to add a tab/button that you can click for an Uncyclopedia-specific sig. Instead of using ~~~~ you just click the tab to add the sig. I have this already so that I can use multiple signatures if I choose. I don't know js, but I believe it's this part of my js page:
if(document.title.indexOf("Editing") == 0) addOnloadHook(addsigs) function addsigs() { addPortletLink('p-cactions','javascript:insertTags("sannse<staff/> (talk) 19:08, August 4, 2015 (UTC)","","");','sig 1','ca-sig1','sannse<staff/> (talk)','1'); addPortletLink('p-cactions','javascript:insertTags("sannse<staff/> (talk) 19:08, August 4, 2015 (UTC)","","");','sig 2','ca-sig2','sannse<staff/> (talk)','2'); }
- Spike: do you want monobook on all wikias? At the moment your preferences are for Wikia skin, unless you are on Uncyclopedia or another wikia that's fixed on Monobook. So your skin will switch if you go from here to almost any other wikia. Let me know exactly what you are seeing (and what you want to see) and I can have a closer look
- Gadgets is not a universal extension, so you will only have those options if thesannse<staff/> (talk) 19:08, August 4, 2015 (UTC) extension has been enabled on that particular wikia.
- Puppy, editing on any mobile device is still funky, but we definitely hope to break the brokenness in the future. At the moment we are working on improving the display of all wikias on mobile devices, and have just introduced a new login system. So it's getting there (albeit slowly, so much to do!)
- And finally, the issues I mentioned about with logins not always "sticking" between Uncyc and other wikias are fixed. You should now be fully logged in everywhere, wherever you choose to actually click the log in button.
- Anyone seen issues I've missed? -- sannse <staff /> (help forum | blog) 19:08, August 4, 2015 (UTC)
See,
- When the Super Bowl is on CBS, no amount of advertising can induce me to take in either the CBS Evening News or the next episode of Jive-talking Waitresses.
- Likewise, even though Uncyclopedia is on Wikia, I am not receptive to the latest developments on Wikia's Skippy Peanut Butter Wiki.
I came here solely to write fake encyclopedia articles, not to be a Member of someone's Community. Consequently, I always want the Uncyclopedia
skin. Unfortunately,
- Admin tools such as the Dashboard have inexplicable dependencies on specific skins.
- So does Wikia Chat, which I enabled here a couple days ago to try it out.
- Most of Wikia's other sites are lacking an
Uncyclopedia
skin, though I don't blame them.
I apologize for indicting the Wikia code coolies above. The situation could be even worse: As you imply, I might have changed my preferences myself, when trying out the above features, when checking your Message Wall, or when visiting a wiki that isn't all-Uncyclopedia, all-the-time. Various Uncyclopedians warned about the bad effects of globalizing users' settings last year when I proposed that we knock down the username firewall and was told to forget about it.
Skins are about the look-and-feel of a page. Right here, we use Uncyclopedia
to get the look-and-feel to be exactly Wikipedia (while the content is oddly wrong). I am willing for the Wikia Community Pages or the Star Trek Wiki to come up looking like Wikipedia, but not willing for a visit elsewhere to needlessly throw off my status here. I do not want to be recruited to any other skin, nor have skins used to recruit me to anything else. Spıke 🎙️19:41 4-Aug-15
- We were sort of promised in 2013 when I visited Evil HQ that there was a possibility of updating the Uncyclopedia skin to look like Wikipedia as it does now. It is the skin I always look at when on the site, though I know others have their own preferences. --RomArtus*Imperator ITRA (Orate) ® 21:08, August 4, 2015 (UTC)
- The problem with sigs issue is that the sig policy here is that we use a template sig that is not subst'ed. Other Wikia wikis won't allow that unless we've created a template on each wiki,
- While a secondary button is a solution - and easily doable - I'm of a habit of using ~~~ when signing.
- What I'll eventually get around to is a sig code that does an ifexist on a sig template. Using this means I will have a sig in template if the template is there, or code dump if not.
- As for mobile editing - I'm still unable to do this at all. A soon as I go beyond reading an article it dies. Which means I can't read history, edit, compare changes, etc.
- And I was going to say something about skins, but I'll come back to that later. The previous edit was signed by PuppyOnTheRadio, but he is too lazy to create a signature yet. 10:04 pm 04 Aug 2015
