This weekend, Jon Sankey from our Bristol team hosted a talk at the Bristol Harbour Festival. Since 1971 the festival has been showcasing Bristol and its Harbour through activity that celebrates the past and offers a fresh perspective on the future. For the Bristol heat network, The Harbour is central to the future of decarbonising Bristol's heating and helping the city achieve its climate goals. At the festival's Talk Tent, Jon explained how the Harbour is heating homes via the Castle Park Energy Centre, England's largest water source heat pump. It was a pleasure to join in the celebration of Bristol and its Harbour, and help highlight how the Harbour continues to serve the Bristol community as part of its rich history. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Alasdair Allan, The Scottish Parliament Minister for Climate Action, to the Midlothian Heat Network yesterday. This visit underscored the significance of our collective efforts towards low carbon energy solutions.   Large-scale heat networks like ours play an essential role in Scotland's transition to a sustainable future. By harnessing innovative technologies and fostering community collaboration, we are taking tangible steps towards the Scottish Government's ambitious net zero by 2045 target. Our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy efficiency is more critical than ever.

Today, July 15th, we celebrate World Youth Skills Day, a day dedicated to emphasising the critical importance of equipping young people with the skills necessary for employment. This initiative also addresses pressing issues such as youth unemployment and underemployment by promoting investment in education and training. We were delighted to meet with the DBDH delegation in London yesterday at the Danish Embassy to explain the rapidly changing regulatory landscape in the UK in favour of district heating. Nicholas Allen, Head of Investment at Vattenfall, also spoke on the different commercial structures we have used in our projects and the different outcomes they have.

Installation of pipework has begun for the Temple heat network in Bristol, our first new network area to begin construction since the kick-off of Bristol City Leap. This is a significant milestone in our work to expand the existing Bristol heat network, develop new networks and to supply the equivalent of 12,000 homes with low carbon heat by 2030. It's been a joint effort, and we're grateful to our contractors 3D Technical Design Ltd and ThermaMech in helping us achieve this milestone. In a testing working environment, ThermaMech have shown an immediate commitment to health and safety, and to quality of installation, as demonstrated by the photo from the site below. Claus Wattendrup has been appointed as UK Country Head for Vattenfall. Claus is currently Vattenfall’s Vice President for Solar and Batteries and will continue in this role alongside the UK Country Head position, which he will take up in September 2024. Announcing the appointment, Anna Borg, Vattenfall’s CEO, said: “Claus will bring his vast experience in the energy industry and as a senior leader to the UK, strengthening our presence in this core market and working towards freedom from fossil fuels.” Claus Wattendrup, UK Country Head, said: “The UK is a very important market for Vattenfall and I’m hugely excited to have this opportunity to support our teams here developing renewable generation, electrification and district heating. Now is the time for action, so Vattenfall will continue to be a key partner on the journey to deliver a clean energy transition.”
