We had an incredible time at the ULI Young Leaders Retreat last week! It was a wonderful opportunity for our Young Leaders to connect, learn, and share insights about the future of our industry while exploring the vibrant city of Stockholm. From engaging in discussions on urban development plans to examining how neuroscience can enhance peak performance. Each session sparked valuable conversations and provided actionable takeaways. We had the chance to visit groundbreaking projects around the city, including Slussen, Hästen 21 by Pembroke and Henning Larsen's Rummel Restaurant. Each site showcased how Stockholm is at the forefront of creating sustainable and resilient public spaces. A heartfelt thank you to our speakers and hosts Arne Allewaert, Bojan Ticic, Richard Lindqvist, Neal Scott Hollingsworth, Caroline Strand, Amy Brann, Henrie W. KoetterMalte Leschewitz, Nicolas Bearelle, Stefan Andersson, Rosman Eva, Martina Wahlgren, Kristijan Jordanov, Ariana Maaß, Vlad Pent 🇺🇦 and Oumniya Bouhdoud for their expertise and inspiration, and to all participants for bringing such passion and enthusiasm. Special mention to AMAVI Capital for hosting the opening event and to Urban Partners and Nrep for sponsoring the Young Leaders Retreat 2024. We look forward to the next retreat!

Our Young Leaders were warmly welcomed in Stockholm with inspiring talks from Bojan Ticic of CBRE on Sweden's real estate market outlook, Arne Allewaert, and Richard Lindqvist on why Sweden is important for the future of the built world, closing with Caroline Strand, who highlighted community-driven urban development in Stockholm. With Vlad Pent moderating the session. A special thanks to AMAVI Capital for hosting the opening event and Urban Partners (Nrep) for sponsoring the Young Leaders Retreat 2024. Key takeaways included: - Hotelification of real estate – Offices are increasingly designed like hotels, enhancing tenant experiences. Owners benefit from greater flexibility, reduced leasing risk, and additional revenue from services. - TTech companies driving the office market—Tech is a key driver in Sweden’s office market. Stockholm leads the way as the most innovative country in the EU, with the second-hest concentration of tech unicorns per capita. - Infrastructure as a growth engine – Stockholm’s ambitions to enhance connectivity are backed by major infrastructure projects, including a railway expansion connecting the city with Oslo, solidifying its role as a regional hub. - €115 billion in urban development – With an investment volume of €115 billion projected by 2040, Stockholm is leading the charge in housing and infrastructure development, laying the groundwork for future growth and sustainability.

"Timelines are being pushed back,” Urban Land Institute Europe CEO Lisette Van Doorn told Bisnow. “You’re seeing a lot of internal work being done, people working out how much they might need to spend to improve assets. But we’re not seeing a lot of action." A new report by GIC highlights the staggering potential impact of climate change on REITs, with over $500B at risk by 2050. As extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and shifting environmental policies reshape the landscape, the need for sustainable and resilient real estate has never been more critical. At ULI Europe, we are committed to leading the conversation on integrating sustainable practices across the real estate industry. The urgency is clear: it’s time to build for the future, not just for today. Read more about the challenges ahead and how our sector must adapt: https://lnkd.in/e-TJNey6

It is encouraging to see global conversations around reducing carbon emissions, particularly in the built environment, which significantly contributes to global emissions. ULI Europe's C Change programme collaborates with key stakeholders—developers, investors, and decision-makers that mirror the broader Climate Week agenda of fostering sustainable practices and mitigating climate-related risks.

The path to global carbon pricing To tackle climate change, the polluter pays principle needs to spread further and wider. Globally, there were 78 different carbon pricing and taxation mechanisms. They cover close to one-quarter of international emissions, up from just 5 per cent in 2010, according to the World Bank. The expansion of carbon pricing policies is welcome. They provide an incentive for polluters to shift to cleaner energy sources and to invest in green technology and efficiency. And given signs that the world is warming faster than expected, carbon prices swiftly need to grow wider, and higher. Read more in Financial Times report here: https://lnkd.in/eBvVPWkD To learn more about why carbon pricing matters for real estate and the built environment – register for the next month’s ULI Europe C Change Summit in Barcelona on 17 October 2024 – where the topic of carbon pricing will be explored in more detail through plenary discussions and workshops.
