  • 🌱 Is the current buzzword ‘Plant-Based 3.0’ a useful concept in explaining the evolution of this part of the alternative proteins sector? 🤔 In the Q3 2024 edition of Protein Production Technology International, Louise Davis speaks with seven experts to explore the substance behind the trend and discover the next frontier for plant-based products. If Plant-Based 3.0 broadly refers to great-tasting, clean products delivered in convenient forms at competitive prices, has the sector now pretty much achieved all that it can? Not according to the seven fantastic companies interviewed for this feature. Thanks goes out to Martin Habfast from Umiami, Lukas Böni at Planted, Givaudan's Sylvain Jouet, Romain Joly from Roquette, Mark van Noorloos at Schouten - Specialist in Plant-Based Protein, Vineet Singhal from RelSus and Birgit Dekkers from Rival Foods. 📰Dive into the full feature now: https://hubs.ly/Q02HNP640 #plantbased #alternativeprotein #cleanlabel #proteinproduction #innovation

  • 📰 Even in a slow news week, there’s still plenty to report on in the world of alternative proteins. 🐶😺 The biggest story in the past seven days just missed last week’s emailer, but it’s too big to ignore this week: a UK company has made history by becoming the first company in the world to receive regulatory approval to sell cultivated meat for pet food, a groundbreaking achievement places the UK at the forefront of the cultivated meat industry and sets a precedent for other countries. Meanwhile, in the USA, another company is on track to submit a feeding trial design for FDA approval later this month! It’s all happening in the world of alternative pet food. 🥊 And all of that was happening as a fierce debate over the future of European food erupted at the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) on 15 July, as member states clashed over the role of ‘novel foods’. As the EU grapples with this complex issue, the clash between tradition and innovation is likely to intensify. The outcome will significantly impact the future of European food production and consumer choices. 🍔 Last week, World Animal Protection released Moving the Menu 2024, its latest report card evaluating the top 25 US restaurant chains across five popular categories: burgers, chicken, sandwich, coffee/beverage, and Latin/Mexican-inspired. Must try harder, is the general consensus. The report reveals an alarming lack of plant-based by default options at popular chain restaurants and zero meaningful commitments to address their resource-intensive menus, with most chains receiving low grades. 🍄 Sad news from Sweden as a pioneer in mycoproteins announced its official filing for bankruptcy. Despite the unwavering commitment of employees, board members, and shareholders, the company has encountered significant financial hurdles that have rendered continued independent operations untenable. 💵 But it’s not all doom and gloom. A leading precision fermentation company secured €14 million (US$15.2 million) new funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Program and additional Series A investors advance animal-free egg protein production. As usual, there’s much more online, and don’t forget to follow our LinkedIn page for the stories as they go live… #foodtech #foodproduction #cultivatedmeat #plantbased #fermentation

  • 📢 So many fantastic stories this week that, once again, it’s difficult to know what to bring you first! Check out our website to read much more than we can list below. 📰 But by far most important is that the eighth edition of Protein Production Technology International has just been published. And to think a leading VC told us they didn't know what we'd write about issue after issue... 🍄 First up among this week's stories, though, it has to be the news from a friend of the platform that delighted us. The plant-based protein sector received a significant boost this week with a 'No Questions Letter' from the FDA for this company’s Rhiza mycoprotein. 🐄 The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) published a report titled ‘Culture Clash? What cultured meat could mean for UK farming’, which examines how cultured meat might affect UK farmers. 🤖 Meanwhile, two University of Waterloo students are leveraging AI to understand fish cell growth for large-scale, sustainable cultured seafood production. Their research aims to optimize cell behavior, create fish species profiles, and develop models for animal-free growth media and efficient cell production. 🚗 Alt-meat struggles to compete with real meat on price and taste. Learning from electric vehicles, the industry needs innovation, investment, and government support to bring down costs and create tastier options. This could revolutionize food with sustainable, customized protein, according to one industry consultant. 🖱️ We were also excited to hear that VBites has acquired Alternative Stores, boosting their online presence and product range. This move could benefit both companies and smaller vegan brands, potentially leading to a more competitive and accessible vegan market. 🛒 Dutch supermarkets are ramping up plant-based protein options, with a goal of 60% by 2030. This follows an animal rights campaign and reflects changing consumer preferences. This shift benefits animal welfare, sustainability, and offers consumers more choices. We hope you have a great week ahead! #foodtech #alternativeproteins #foodproduction #plantbased #cultivatedmeat
