Recycling in the news! 📰 WRAP, in collaboration with insights agency SKIM, has released a new report exploring the impact of food waste 🍎 caddies on household waste reduction. The findings reveal that using a food waste caddy not only helps lower household costs, but also promotes positive feelings of "doing something good" for the environment 🍃. The report 📃, titled ‘Opportunities for Prevention with Household Food Waste Collections’, highlights how regular use of a caddy serves as a constant reminder 🚨 of the food we waste, encouraging more mindful habits. However, this awareness may fade over time, underscoring the need for ongoing engagement 💬. The report also shows that tying food waste reduction to cost savings 💷 resonates strongly with consumers, especially during the current cost-of-living crisis. Interestingly, the report found that in England, only 17% of participants used a food waste caddy or bin 🗑️, compared to 42% in Wales and 38% in Austria. There’s also a notable disconnect in understanding what can be placed in the caddy, with many users unsure 💭 about compostable liners and what qualifies as edible food waste. Ultimately, for food caddy systems to be more effective, WRAP emphasises the importance of improving user engagement 🤝 and ensuring proper usage ✅. The textile industry 👚 is a major environmental contributor, accounting for about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 20% of wastewater production—more than shipping 🚢 and aviation ✈️ combined! In the UK, the average person buys 26.7 kg of new clothes each year, with many garments lasting only 2.2 years 📆. This leads to around 300,000 tonnes of clothing being burned or sent to landfills 🗑️ annually. By being mindful 🧠 of our clothing consumption and supporting more sustainable practices, we can help reduce the negative impacts of the fashion industry on the environment 🌍. Swipe 👉 below for some top tips on reducing your wardrobe’s environmental footprint and visit our website to learn more about what to do with old or unwanted clothes 🔗 https://okt.to/Pty26x #textilerecycling #clothesrecycling #oldclothes #recycling #environmentalfootprint

Recycling in the news! 📰 A new initiative in Dorset's Poole Harbour 🌊 is turning discarded fishing nets 🎣 into sustainable products, helping protect the environment and boost the local fishing industry's sustainability efforts. Dedicated recycling bins 🗑️ have been introduced in a bid to prevent fishermen's nets from being illegally dumped at sea or sent to landfill. This innovative scheme, launched by the Weymouth & Portland Marine Litter Project, in collaboration with 🤝 the Poole & District Fisherman's Association, focuses on collecting nylon gill nets. These nets, often discarded at sea 🌊, are now being repurposed into new items. Since May, over 1 tonne of nets, whelk pots, and ropes have been recycled ♻️. The collected nets are sorted at the group's hub in Weymouth Harbour, before being sent to Exeter, where they are transformed into a nylon thread 🧵 called Econyl. This thread is then used to create clothing 👚, which can be recycled repeatedly. Following the success of the Poole Harbour initiative, the group is expanding to Mudeford Harbour in Christchurch 📍, setting up recycling bins for end-of-life fishing gear, nets, and ropes. This initiative showcases the power of community-driven efforts to address marine litter and promote sustainability in the fishing industry! 🐟 Read the full story here 🗞️ https://okt.to/AWNehH
