One of our senior technical colleagues wanted to explore the feasibility of driving the full length of the UK in an EV to address widespread concerns over range anxiety and the public charging infrastructure. Andy Stodart drove his factory standard BMW Group i4, the 842 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End (complying with all statutory speed limits) in just over 15 hours with only 4 charging stops required ! Andy reported a stress-free journey and, although completed overnight, it clearly demonstrated the capability of current technology. A dedicated compound for the delivery and storage of hydrogen allows continuous running of HD engines, fuel cell systems and other machines using this zero carbon fuel. We were delighted to attend the launch of 'CR20' last week - the new racecar from Cardiff Racing for this year's IMechE Formula Student event at Silverstone. With 100 bhp from its Triumph 675 Street Triple, this car can reach 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and generate 2g lateral acceleration. We have also helped the team with electro-thermal analysis of their battery pack for next year's electric racecar. Efficient and durable air management systems are vital for successful fuel cell applications in heavy-duty vehicles.
