🔊 Our National Grid Electricity Transmission Deeside Centre for Innovation team have had lots of engaging conversations at CIGRE Session 2024 this week and today, Jimmy Deas will be presenting his paper on the Retrofit Insulated Cross Arms (RICA) innovation project. 💡 This innovation enables the retrofitting of insulated cross arms on towers in place of the standard metallic cross arms from which insulators and conductors are traditionally attached. It could allow overhead line upgrades from 275kV to 400kV, boosting capacity by over 40% and bringing associated cost benefits to consumers. Through our partnership with insulator manufacturer Shemar and overhead line contractor Wood, the project is progressing well, with a prototype put through its paces in the controlled environment of our Deeside Centre for Innovation. National Grid Electricity Transmission’s Deeside Centre for Innovation team will again be heading to Paris for the CIGRE Session 2024, the leading global event for power system expertise. At our stand we will be exhibiting our state-of-the-art power systems research and innovation facility; a modified 400kV substation, designed as a unique environment for the development and trial of innovative technologies and practices. The centre is the first of its kind in Europe where electricity network assets can be tested under real-life conditions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Both Electricity Transmission and Electricity Distribution innovation teams have secured £400,000 to kickstart three innovation projects to help accelerate Britain’s net zero transition. ⚡ Supported through Ofgem's and UK Research and Innovation Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), the projects will see our innovation teams collaborate with academic and industry partners to tackle key energy network challenges. 💡The latest successful projects include early development of a monitoring system for offshore cables, a project to help decarbonise rural areas, and an initiative looking at ways to support the street and road works sector as it decarbonises. 👉Find out more at: https://lnkd.in/eVEEwyRu

🛣 We need your ideas to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing the energy industry on the road to #netzero! 💬 Experts from our #innovation team have been sharing their insights into some of these challenges at the latest #InnovationBasecamp hosted by Energy Networks Association (ENA). 💡 At the event, we presented 'problem statements' outlining some of the biggest hurdles we've identified in the delivery of the smart energy transition. 🔓 Collaboration will be key to unlocking a clean, fair and affordable smart energy future so conversations like this are crucial to explore and develop the industry-wide solutions needed to meet the UK's net zero targets. Our problem statements focused on the need for innovative projects to help: ✅ decarbonise network operations ✅ increase the flexibility and efficiency of the energy system to speed up the adoption of low carbon technologies ✅ make the most of existing network infrastructure to reduce the cost and environmental impact of new construction projects.
