💻 AI research donation from AMD 1️⃣0️⃣1️⃣... https://hubs.ly/Q02KWk120 Here at Imperial College London we've been at the forefront of technology (re-)invention for generations, and with new advances in AI, we're at the coal face of the research underpinning both the hardware and software that will revolutionise the world. This latest donation is a recognition of our world-leading status here, in particular the expertise of Professor George Constantinides and Dr Aaron Zhao. “Because we can develop the processor architecture around the algorithm, we get really high performance.” #LLMs #LargeLanguageModels #ChatGPT #AIHardware (In future, this post might be written by AI. For now, it's still us humans doing the important work!)

🧠💻Big news for tiny implants: https://hubs.ly/Q02KMPyg0 “The range of conditions we can currently treat with neural or bioelectronic implants is quite limited.” - Professor Timothy Constandinou, Professor of Bioelectronics at Imperial College London and co-founder of MintNeuro Over a billion people worldwide are affected by neurological conditions like stroke, epilepsy, #Parkinson’s and #MotorNeuroneDisease. #NeuralImplants offer a promising route towards developing new treatments and therapies for conditions like these. Established bioelectronic interventions like cochlear implants have already helped over 1 million people, and this latest partnership with Amber Therapeutics, funded through an Innovate UK Smart Grant, aims to co-develop a 'neural chiplet', which is a tasty proposition!

💉Making MusiCC with Human Challenge Trials During the COVID-19 pandemic, Human Challenge Trials became a vital way of understanding the virus and how to vaccinate against it. Based on centuries-old methodology, the new advances helped us contain the disease at a pace never-before experienced. Building on that, our Research Impact Management Office are about to embark on supporting leading researchers from Imperial College London and beyond on a new project, MusiCC, funded through the European Union's Horizon Europe Programme and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), and you can read more about it in this feature in The Times from earlier this year: https://hubs.ly/Q02KbkDP0 Picture credit: Ernesto Mastrascusa/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock

💸Giving back when going forwards: https://hubs.ly/Q02Kb5F70 The Imperial College London innovation ecosystem is full of connections across our community. Last year, we launched the Imperial Entrepreneurs' Pledge to enable our startup founders to contribute their support in a range of ways, from funding for Imperial Enterprise Lab or Imperial College Advanced Hackspace, through to helping someone come to Imperial who might otherwise not be able to. And they do so through pledging a contribution after they reach a certain stage in their company's progress. Look out for stories from our first pledgers over the coming weeks, and contact the team directly for more information about the scheme and how you can get involved.

🔬🦠Commercialising cell membranes and proteins tests with Molecular Dimensions: https://hubs.ly/Q02JWwzm0 Imperial College London and Molecular Dimensions are looking to commercialise a high-throughput test to advance our understanding of integral membrane proteins, which are vital targets for 60% of prescribed drugs. Developed by Professor Bernadette Byrne and her team in the Department of Life Sciences, the new technique uses a screen to identify lipids that restore the stability and function of these proteins. This has the potential for revolutionising biological research and leading to development of new life-improving medicines in the cases of hypertension, depression, or infectious diseases, where medicines work by altering or exploiting how integral membrane proteins function.
