The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has proposed the procurement of over 10GW of new #energy resources, including 2GW of long duration energy storage. Following the California Energy Commission's (CEC) emphasis on the importance of energy storage with an eight-hour or more discharge, this is the latest signal that LDES is being embraced as a powerful #decarbonization solution. The procurement seeks #LDES with 1GW multi-day energy storage and 1GW with a 12-hour or more discharge, alongside 1GW of #geothermal systems and 7.6GW of offshore #wind, totaling 10.6GW of nameplate capacity. California currently has over 10GW of battery storage, with projections indicating 52GW will be needed to achieve the state's goal of 100% #renewable energy by 2045.
