🏥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 - 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗘 & 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦 𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗦, 𝗕𝗜𝗥𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗛𝗔𝗠👨⚕️ 👩⚕️ As Healthcare Science Week comes to an end, we are revisiting the project at Good Hope and Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham which we completed with main contractor McAvoy. This is a fitting end to the week, as the project exemplifies the ability of forward-thinking NHS providers and construction professionals to adapt to extenuating circumstances, coming together to ensure the continuity of first-class health provision in the UK. The project was borne out of the rising pressures of the COVID 19 pandemic, and the need to increase patient capacity at an accelerated pace resulting in 96 new beds, across the two hospital sites, comprising both ward blocks and single ensuite rooms, staff rooms, and clean and dirty utility rooms to ensure a functional ward for all staff. The escalated 10-week design and procurement period allowed works to start offsite at McAvoy’s factory, using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). At this point we entered an 8-week first fix within the Lisburn premises, prior to the units being wrapped and transported to the hospital sites in Birmingham. With most of the services being fed from the existing hospital, we had to work closely with the enabling works contractor, Tilbury Douglas to ensure that all essential services were left at the correct position when the building was landed on site. Once landed on site, we had 13 weeks to complete installation, commission, and handover. This required effective communication and coordination of all project parties to make this possible. Services within this combined £5m M&E project consisted of Fire Alarm, Data Installation, Security, Medical Gases, Ventilation, Heating and Domestic Pipework. Meeting the requirements of the fast-track M&E programme would not have been possible without the support of our supply chain partners. • 🏥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 - 𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗛 𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗫 🔬 Successfully handed over in April 2017, we managed the electrical contract for the complete new-build, state-of-the-art hospital. Works began on-site for Dowds Group in August 2015 and such was the scale of the project, at its peak a team of approximately 120 electrical operatives were on site. Working alongside Main Contractors, McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd and Consultant Engineers Engineers, WYG Group, the two-and-a-half-year project was successfully handed over and fully operational within a week, which is testament to the expertise of the service providers involved. The colossal 22,900 m2 complex is set on a brownfield site and hosts a range of co-located services under the one roof. This entire hospital is newly built and consists of 6 blocks housing services including a 40 single en-suite bedrooms unit for in-patients for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care patients, a 24 place renal dialysis unit, a Health and Care Centre including modern GP practices and an Urgent Care and Treatment Centre, as well as advanced diagnostic services including a CT scanner and endoscopy services. Along with  3 day surgery operating theatres and 22 recovery beds, specialised AHP, Women’s & Family Health and Children’s Services. The external areas consist of staff and visitors parking, play areas, viewing gardens and a Heli pad for emergency services. Such is the scale of the building that it required a purpose-built energy centre, complete with generators and CHP. #healthcare #healthcarescience #buildingbetterhealthcare #BBH24 #nhs

🏥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 - 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟, 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗚𝗘 🔬 This highly complex installation to a new three storey 7969sq.m facility, accommodation included 10 birthing suites complete with ensuite and wet rooms, Critical Care Neo-natal intensive care (28 cot unit), a 30 cot sick children’s birthing unit (SCBU) all with complex services including medical gas and dual power systems, an MRI unit and 10 Birthing pool suites together with Fetal Medicine and Day Assessment Units. Other supporting units including Gynaecology and Physiotherapy. Due to the life critical services in many of the units as well as the diagnostic imaging equipment, there was complex and comprehensive IPS/UPS back-up and an earth referencing system that had to comply with MEIGaN (Medical Electrical Installation Guidance regulations) to ensure the reliability and resilience of the power supplies. Again, in the high dependency units our services had to meet exacting decibel levels to comply with acoustic concerns given the critical/sensitive nature of the infants that would be in the room.  To maintain quality and to meet the tight programme we chose to offsite manufacture the vertical bedhead trunking. As this contained the medical gas, power, data and nurse call this meant significant co-ordination was required to ensure the services were brought to the exact locations in the ceilings. #healthcare #healthcarescience #buildingbetterhealthcare #BBH24 #nhs #innovation

  • 🏥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 - 𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗡𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗟𝗩𝗜𝗡 𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗬 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧 🔬 We have carried out numerous projects at Altnagelvin Hospital over the last 10 years, one of which was the Radiotherapy Treatment Unit.   This £12.9 Million (M&E) project consisted of mechanical, electrical, and medical gas installations within a new build unit to complement and enhance the existing live hospital site.   The building provided ground floor treatment rooms with 4 linear accelerator bunkers, MRI scanner suites, CT scanner suites and plain X-ray. Whilst the 1st and 2nd floor includes offices, respite care, bed wards and isolation suites. There was also an extension and refurbishment of the existing Chemotherapy Suite, the refurbishment of the ground floor of the Tower Block and the construction of an underground carpark. We were involved in the project from RIBA Stage 4 (technical design stage) and employed our BIM Department as a vital part of the team from the early coordination phase through to installation. Utilising simulation and visualisation through the BIM model allowed our team to detect clashes early on, and ‘build’ the project in a virtual environment, to solve any potential problems, before installation commenced. At Dowds we strive to enhance the lives of those in our communities and this radiotherapy centre has the most advanced medical technology meaning it's cutting down on tiring journeys for seriously-ill patients who previously would have been facing arduous trips to Belfast, Dublin or Galway. #healthcare #healthcarescience #buildingbetterhealthcare #BBH24 #nhs #innovation #cancertreatment #medicalinnovation #radiotherapy #treatment

🏥 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞 - 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗬 𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗘, 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 🔬 Today marks the start of Healthcare Science Week, an opportunity to highlight the amazing work the NHS healthcare science has played in the role of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease and the health of the UK. We have had the privilege to work on some amazing projects over the years one of them being a £30 Million Cancer Treatment Centre located within the Thames Valley Science Park, part of the University of Reading,   Our Building Services team completed the M&E installation on a High Energy Proton Beam Cancer Therapy Centre which required extensive off-site construction and fabrication. Due to the complex nature of the project we partnered with numerous specialist contractors to complete the installations in complex rooms, which included linear accelerator bunkers, an MRI scan room, CT simulator room, CT Scanner, Superficial treatment room, X-ray rooms and chemotherapy suites. • 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗧𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗦𝗗𝗔𝗬 – 𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗘, 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗢𝗡 This week as part of our Throwback Thursday series we are looking at one of our recent London Projects. Nine Elms STEAM College is a 10 storey, 10,000sq ft further education teaching building. The building now known as London South Bank Technical College, opened in June 2023 and offers its students courses from all elements of construction (bricklaying to electrical installations), as well as dental, engineering, health and social care, computing, IT, creative and digital. Dowds were appointed as MEP contractor back in 2021 along with Main Contractor GRAHAM. This project required the MEP services to be designed and installed in line with the ambitious low carbon targets set out by the architects and main contract design team to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. Dowds were proud to be part of a project which is helping to address the skills shortage not only in our industry but across all STEAM disciplines.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘: 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗛 𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗢𝗡 Good progress is being made at Queen Elizabeth Hospital where we have been appointed by McLaren to deliver the MEP package on the £30 Million Sitewide Infrastructure Project. We are well progressed on the installation of the new electrical distribution where we have installed a new HV ring around the hospital along with a HV switch panel to supply two new packaged substations. Mechanically we are upgrading the medical gas through the hospital with a new VIE compound to provide additional resilience for the hospital. Bed head trunking is also being upgraded throughout all Wards as well with additional gas terminals being installed to accommodate more beds. Phase 2 is now underway where the existing supplies around the hospital will be transferred to the new distribution system. Read more about the project on our website: https://lnkd.in/eDMuQidu
