About us

We are the UK's national standards body (NSB). We represent UK economic and social interests across all European and international standards organizations and in the development of business information solutions for British organizations of all sizes and sectors. BSI is appointed by the UK Government and represents UK interests at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the European Standards Organizations (CEN, CENELEC and ETSI). Formed in 1901, BSI was the world’s first National Standards Body. Our role is to help improve the quality and safety of products, services and systems by enabling the creation of standards and encouraging their use. Standards provide the knowledge that organizations need to implement best practice and succeed. They can offer a set of powerful tools to make your organization more innovative and productive.

  • The evolution of built environment standards is essential for driving progress in safety, innovation, and sustainability. The second generation of Eurocodes represents an advancement in this process, incorporating the latest research, cutting-edge materials, and global insights into a comprehensive framework for designing and building across Europe. These updated standards are the result of a collaborative effort among standards organizations throughout Europe, with BSI playing a pivotal role as the UK's national standards body. As active participants in CEN’s Technical Committee (CEN/TC 250), including Tracey Wilkins serving as Secretariat, and WSP’s Steve Denton as Chair, the UK is committed to ensuring that the unique needs of our construction sector are addressed, while also contributing to and aligning with global best practices. Contribute to shaping the future of Eurocodes by sharing your expertise. • On 13 September, BSI proudly sponsored the BYP Network Careers Fest and Leadership Conference 2024. This formed part of our growing partnership with BYP Network—one of the UK’s largest platforms for advancing the careers of Black professionals globally. At our exhibition stand, we had the opportunity to introduce delegates to the world of standards and the invaluable career benefits of getting involved. Additionally, we hosted 1:1 recruiter sessions led by Nick Cavaciuti, BSI Lead Talent Acquisition Partner, where attendees explored various career opportunities within BSI. Our panel discussion on inclusive succession planning and building a diverse future, led by Amanda Edwards, Change Management Director at BSI, highlighted BSI’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion—both within our organization and the broader standards development process. Amanda was joined by Sarah Terrell, BSI Young Professionals Engagement Manager, and Esther M., Head of Tech Policy at ICAEW (and BSI Standards Maker), who further delved into the benefits of getting involved in standards. We are thrilled by the enthusiasm of the #YPs we met and are excited to welcome over 50 new members to the BSI Young Professionals Network!

  • It was great to be part of the Women in Work Summit 2024 yesterday. We loved hearing from organizations like Oxford Brookes University, who are already putting BS 30416—our menopause and menstrual health toolkit for employers—into practice, and having wider conversations with other attendees about gender equity at work. A highlight was hearing from Anne Hayes, our Director of Sectors and Standards Development, during her panel discussion on building workplace cultures that are supportive of menstruation through to menopause. Anne was joined by Maxine Fletcher from Oxford Brookes University, Ruby Parmar from TOTM and host Naomi Begum-Inglis from Accenture. We also had the pleasure of meeting the Wellbeing of Women team and are proud to announce that BSI is now a partner of their Menopause Workplace Pledge—an initiative helping employers commit to creating inclusive environments where menopausal employees feel supported and understood.
