🤓 You've just been assigned your weekend reading 📑 🌍 In his latest blog post, James Cole, Chief Innovation Officer at CISL, highlights the vital role that sustainability entrepreneurs play in creating a greener, more equitable future. 💡✨ While they face challenges competing in markets that don’t fully account for social and environmental impacts, these innovators thrive on change and seek to transform industries by addressing global challenges like climate change, inequality, and resource depletion. The journey towards sustainable markets requires both entrepreneurial vision and supportive policy interventions. From pioneering renewable energy startups like Ecotricity to trailblazers like Tesla and Beyond Meat, sustainability entrepreneurs are redefining what’s possible and pushing industries towards greener solutions. As James notes, “Sustainability entrepreneurs can’t wait for markets to change; they are actively creating the markets we need.” They are not just competing with incumbents but providing tools and insights that help industries transition toward sustainability. 📈 Discover how these innovators are reshaping markets and what we need to do to support them in this critical journey. 🌍 Today Canopy members and our team were delighted to attend an inspiring Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) Lunch & Learn on "Climate Tech Ventures in Emerging Markets" led by Priya Shah Founder & General Partner of Theia Ventures. 🌱 The event shed light on the urgent need for climate resilience and the key role venture investments play in shaping a sustainable future, particularly in the Global South. It’s startling to remind people that global temperatures have already risen by 1.2°C, and climate change could drive over 100 million people into extreme poverty. Now more than ever, we need innovation to tackle these pressing challenges. Some key takeaways: 1️⃣ Climate tech investment is growing rapidly, with over $142 billion in global funding between 2020 and 2023. Sectors like clean energy, electric transportation, and battery technology are leading the charge. 🌱🔋 2️⃣ India, in particular, stands out as a potential climate tech leader due to its robust venture ecosystem, policy support, and a growing pool of entrepreneurs and scientists. With initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Policy and EV mandates, India is setting the pace for the global green transition. 🚗🔋 3️⃣ When looking at the Indian market, some of the biggest opportunities lie in business model innovation. It's not just about unearthing brand new tech - they see huge value and impact potential in scaling existing technology through new business models and approaches. 4️⃣ Theia Ventures itself is pioneering this space, investing in transformative solutions like smart grids, battery recycling, and carbon markets. It was especially fascinating to hear about their portfolio companies such as alt-M, focused on biomaterials, and Metastable Materials, advancing battery recycling in India. 🔄⚡ Priya closed with a powerful quote from Al Gore, which perfectly captured the spirit of the talk: "We’re now in the early stages of a sustainability revolution... with the potential to completely reshape our world for the better." 🌍 Thank you to Priya for an incredible session! The intersection of climate tech and emerging markets is truly exciting, and we look forward to seeing more innovation in this space. Having these regular lunch and learn events, led by thought-leaders and industry superstars is one of the amazing benefits of joining our Canopy community. #ClimateTech #Sustainability #CISL #Canopy #EmergingMarkets #VentureCapital #CISLEnergyTransision #IndiaClimateInnovation

Canopy (CISL) reposted this
OFFSETx part of the ten selected to join Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) at Canopy (CISL) next to BSI - British Standard Institution 🌎 I’ll be moving between Cambridge, London, and Paris this year, engaging with governmental stakeholders and industry leaders on emission market trade. Whether you’re keen to understand emission markets, unlock revenue through smart trading, or reduce pollution via direct access to emission allowance markets, let’s connect! As a fun reminder (because sustainability is serious, but it doesn’t have to be dull 😉): Carbon credits and carbon allowances are not the same! But no matter the terminology, we are beyond excited to be part of this incredible cohort. Next week we'll be shooting out beta access keys, DM me if you want exclusive access to the trading app. Let's go Remko and @Francois! A big shoutout to the amazing companies and individuals we’ll be joining on this journey of innovation and integrity.
