About The Role

Steer is currently looking for an experienced and ambitious active travel professional to join us as we continue to grow and expand our offer across the active travel market. If you're passionate about active travel and have a track record in creating safer, healthier, and more attractive places to live, we'd love to hear from you.

As our Active Travel Lead, based in either London, Manchester, or Leeds, you would be responsible for pushing forward our active travel offer. You will be able to consistently demonstrate technical excellence across a wide portfolio of projects, while also working to generate work winning opportunities with current and new clients. Our team is proud to be working on a range of high profile and exciting schemes across the UK, such as:

  • 🤝 Providing stakeholder engagement support to the London Boroughs of Islington and Camden on their Liveable Neighbourhood programmes - supporting them to deliver substantial change.
  • 📑 Supporting West Yorkshire Combined Authority to develop an Active Travel Strategy
  • 🚶‍♀️ Developing Liveable Neighbourhood feasibility designs and stakeholder engagement inputs for schemes in Hackney, Camden, and Ealing
  • 📊 Evaluating active travel programmes and scheme to understand their success, for example the national e-cycle pilot programme for the Department for Transport
  • 🚲 Developing Local Walking and Cycling Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) for local and regional authorities
  • 📰 Setting the vision for Deansgate in Manchester - a key element of the City Centre Access Strategy
  • ♿ Providing equality and accessibility guidance for schemes such as the Bank junction redevelopment, the Oxford Street renewal project and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods across London


Requirements

As an Associate, you will be one of the most senior people in the team. You will be expected to take a project director role in project teams comprised of both junior and more senior experts. You will be confident in taking charge of developing new business opportunities for our active travel practice, as well as building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the public sector, in particular the London boroughs and Transport for London. As a senior figure within our team, you will be confident in helping to guide and develop our young, passionate, and talented team.

In this role, you will:

  • Be comfortable working in creative multi-disciplinary teams and provide positive contributions in resolving complex design problems. This involves a good working knowledge of best practice (such as LTN 1/20) in regard to active travel
  • Be able to generate work within the active travel market that helps us to sustain a strong pipeline of work across all levels of seniority
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the public sector, in particular the London boroughs and Transport for London
  • Be able to independently lead on bids and financial proposals for new and existing clients
  • Take responsibility managing multiple deadlines in parallel across a portfolio of projects. This will involve managing some projects which are high profile and contentious
  • Demonstrate exemplary written and oral communication skills
  • Be able to manage and lead multidisciplinary teams located from offices across the UK
  • Be continually keeping up to date with developments in the transport industry, including policy and best practice
  • Represent the company at industry events and conferences, speaking about the work delivered by Steer
  • Must be legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future

Compensation

Steer is committed to ensuring that all its employees are compensated a fairly and at a competitive rate. All initial compensation, regardless of location, may be subject to change as skills, abilities, and internal equity are taken into account.

In addition to base salary, all employees will be eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus. Please review the benefits section for more information on total reward.

We offer a competitive package of benefits including private medical insurance and health screening, life assurance, group income protection, company pension scheme, EAP, Season Ticket Loan, a group Share Incentive Plan, up to 5 days for volunteering activities and a discretionary bonus scheme based on annual compensation (dependent upon individual and company performance).

Additionally, we offer 25 days annual leave, plus the 8 bank holidays and the ability to buy and sell leave in the year to give extra flexibility.
