Drill Baby Drill = Stranded Assets · IEA’s recent global oil outlook highlights China’s leveraged impact on global demand @ ~60% of the total global increase in demand over the last decade. · As petrochem demand from construction (75% of said growth in last 5 years) declines & Chinese transportation transitions to alt fuels & EV’s(~50% new vehicles in July), that leverage turns negative. So what? With China demand ex growth, & lacklustre increases or declines in many other geographies, the x-read for future returns to new, long-life, fossil fuel infrastructure isn’t bullish, even before considering lower levelized costs of energy from renewables. https://lnkd.in/eMXHW-kU #strandedassets #energytransition

MfE consultation on ETS settings now out. Not unexpectedly, a number of options around unit supply are put forward ranging from status quo to the Commission's recommendations. This however I was not expecting: "There are two options for changes to price triggers. 1. The first option is to maintain the status quo with adjustment for inflation from 2027. 2. The second option is to lower trigger prices for both the auction price floor and the CCR." https://lnkd.in/gtTMcTUt The document does not actually put forward a concrete proposal for how much to lower price triggers by - it is only asks submitters if "lower" is preferred. That suggests to me that this option was added late without analysis having been done (presumably as a result of Cabinet's decision on what should be included in the paper). It hardly speaks to political commitment to a rising price path to drive action.
