If you think you can’t be a mortgage broker because you don’t have a property or finance background, think again. If you have transferable skills, there’s no reason you can’t transition into a mortgage broking career successfully with the right training and guidance. What do I mean by transferable skills? These are “soft” skills that can be applied to different industries, such as communication, problem-solving or negotiation skills. These types of skills can greatly benefit you as a mortgage broker. Do you need hard skills, such as real estate knowledge and financial skills? Absolutely, but these can be learned. High street banks restrict SME funding, say brokers, Nearly 80% of brokers believe high street banks are reducing funding for SMEs, according to a recent survey undertaken for an alternative lender, the Q1 2024 SME Expert Index. A patron of NACFB says this figure is unchanged from the previous quarter and highlights the ongoing challenges for SMEs. Bank of England data shows that lending to big businesses rose to 77% in 2023, while lending to SMEs fell by over £1 billion. With demand for SME finance expected to rise, 68% of brokers predict banks will continue to decline in lending appetite.
