Master's research was conducted in Montpelier, France, in the lab of Jerome Bonnet. This research focussed on systems and synthetic biology; on engineering DNA-based biological computation systems in E.coli.

In the taught course I selected specialisms in molecular virology and epidemiology.

Activities and Societies: MEXT Postgraduate Scholar

I successfully won a MEXT scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in International Relations at Waseda University. I was selected from several thousand applicants for this prestigious scholarship, which covered tuition, accommodation, and living expenses for two years of research and study in Japan.

I successfully won a MEXT scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in International Relations at Waseda University. I was selected from several thousand applicants for this prestigious scholarship, which covered tuition, accommodation, and living expenses for two years of research and study in Japan.

My thesis was based on previous collaboration with JICA. Japan has pursued a number of initiatives in SEA (such as its work on dengue fever) which could be described as medical diplomacy. Medical diplomacy is an emerging term; the subject of intense interest but still lacking formal definition and grounding theory. My research would have focused on Japan's past successes as a model of medical diplomacy policy.

Sadly, the COVID pandemic meant that the scholarship was unable to go ahead and I was forced to abandon this opportunity. However, I continued to develop my basic thesis which has been integrated into a larger piece of work due to be published.

As part of a mixed Chinese and English team, I helped structure and lead a research programme around homelessness in Beijing, and the public policy response to this issue.
