... an interesting conclusion considering that many commuters travel during these low light periods, surely turns are unavoidable on just about every journey. According to the stats ADAS vehicles are 5.25 times more likely to crash in low light and 1.98 times more likely to have accidents during complex turns, therefor the potential for increased accidents is significant. I'm thinking before ADAS becomes a serious benefit, there needs to be improvement in sensor technology and the decision-making algorithms for autonomous vehicles to match and ultimately exceed human performance... over to you guys...

Stop undervaluing junior engineers.   I see it every day. “We want 5 top-class engineers with 10 years of experience working within vehicle dynamics and simulation environments” There simply aren’t enough expert engineers in niche areas to go around. Waiting around for the perfect candidate to come to you isn’t a strategy; it’s a gamble and one you’re likely to lose. Developing your own junior engineers will make recruiting and retaining employees easier. You might think, “We need experts, not entry-level candidates.” But the reality is that those experts were juniors once, and the companies that invested in their development are the ones reaping the benefits today. So, how can you do this? 1. Partner with Universities and Educational Institutions The first step is building relationships with universities with strong engineering programs. Set up internships, co-op programs, and scholarships that attract the brightest students and introduce them to your company’s culture and values. These partnerships allow you to shape their skills to meet your specific needs before they even enter the full-time job market. 2. Create a Structured Development Program Once you’ve brought these junior engineers on board, don’t just throw them in the deep end and hope for the best. Develop a structured training and mentorship program that accelerates their growth. By the time they’ve gained a few years of experience, they’ll be exactly the kind of talent your competitors are scrambling to find—except they’ll already be loyal to your company. 3. Focus on Long-Term Talent Pipeline Development Building a talent pipeline isn’t a quick fix; it’s a long-term strategy. But in a market where the demand for engineers far exceeds the supply, it’s one of the smartest moves you can make. Start now, and in a few years, you won’t just have a team of engineers—you’ll have a team of experts perfectly aligned with your company’s needs and goals. If you’re serious about staying ahead in this competitive market, you need to think beyond the immediate hiring needs. By investing in junior engineers today, you’re building the foundation for tomorrow’s success. Another set of issues to consider is the grid electric generating capacity globally, the charging infrastructure, or current lack of it, and the availability of copper as a raw material. All areas of concern in my humble opinion.

I’ve just published our 8th Episode of Talking Product: VW’s struggle with EV https://lnkd.in/eSKinivq In this session Collin Lyons & I use Volkswagen’s struggle to build Electric Vehicle (EV) software as a way to explore two themes: 1) the importance of getting a digital transformation right, and 2) the opportunity presented to competitors when large players simply cannot deliver good quality digital products. We use two articles from the Financial Times as a springboard for our conversation. The first article, dated Jun 28, 2024 “Oliver Blume, VW and Porsche boss steering an EV strategy shift” https://lnkd.in/e9C6fDSA and the second one, published September 2, 2024 “VW considers closing factories in Germany and cutting jobs” https://lnkd.in/emEY_fBj (both behind a paywall - sorry) The first article describes an investment of $5 billion in the US based EV startup Rivian. The purpose of the investment is to create a joint partnership that allows VW to use Rivian’s EV software. The article quotes VW’s CEO Oliver Blume as saying, “In terms of a big tech transformation, you can’t do it all on your own… It should be a win-win situation . . . The motivation from our side is to speed up software transformation at Volkswagen in all our brands. Rivian has best in class architecture . . . Volkswagen has the scale”. Collin and I explore this thinking of an acquisition / strategic partnership as a means for fixing an internal digital transformation challenge. As we ask in the show, what mental models will need to change for these two companies - a digital native and a non-digital native, to work effectively together? As Collin highlights, ultimately these transformations are culture changes, which require heavy-lifting.
