Setting the ‘standard’ for net zero buildings: The first UK methodology for verifying buildings as net zero carbon has launched today... Buro Happold is proud to have been part of the #UKNetZeroCarbonBuildingsStandard Pilot Version, which will enable the built environment industry to prove that built assets are net zero carbon and align with the UK’s climate targets. Until this point, there has been no single, agreed methodology for defining what ‘net zero carbon’ means for buildings in the UK. The standard is a collaboration comprising 350 experts from across the industry, including engineers, architects, carbon assessors, developers, and more.  Duncan Price, Sustainability/Climate Global Lead, Buro Happold, said: “We are delighted to see the launch of the pilot version of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.     “Buro Happold was pleased to contribute expertise to this industry-backed initiative which will bring clarity for anyone who wants to fund, procure, design, or specify a net zero carbon building. Transforming our built environment requires a new approach to designing and constructing buildings. We urge the next government to establish whole life carbon targets for buildings, focus on retrofitting our existing housing stock through a National Retrofit Strategy, and require Post Occupancy Evaluation for publicly funded projects. NBS Sustainable Futures Report…. 568 people contributed to this survey. All professional consultants in the construction sector, mainly Architects and predominantly from the UK. Presumably self-selecting. Great to see a growing awareness of more sustainable practices but the progress seems almost glacial. Why are we still celebrating “some knowledge” of UN SDGs? Or some experience with BREEAM, LEED or Passivhaus? Or some experience on a sustainable project? Shouldn’t this be absolutely mainstream? It’s where the Value(s) are. Are we not teaching sustainability and benefits of applying SDGs to all students? Why isn’t every project pushing the dial on sustainability? We have an opportunity (a responsibility) to do more. RICS has published a policy summary on the recently approved EPBD. All commercial buildings are required to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rated E or above, driven by the Government’s legally-binding 2050 #NetZero target. Our Natural Ventilation with Heat Recycling and Heat Recovery is the ideal solution to provide energy efficient ventilation. The NVHRe features a low resistance heat exchanger cell within the unit. This allows the unit to benefit from both heat recycling and heat recovery, reclaiming even more heat than previous models, saving more energy, providing greater occupant comfort, and allowing users to include the heat recovery efficiency within the building energy assessments (SBEM). https://lnkd.in/envx93FC

#HousingCommunitySummit: 'Resident Engagement with Building Safety', at the Asset Management and Dacarbonisation Theatre, sponsored by Plentific. With: Sinan F., Ola Shanu, Liz Oliver, John Murray, Neil Yeomans CEnvH MCIEH, and chaired by Vicky Saunders. The session seeks to unpack what an effective resident engagement strategy involves. John starts with an overview of the Building Safety Act, and some of the problems that have been identified in reports, such as the recent Grenfell Inquiry report: - The BSA is a large and complex piece of legislation.  - Section 91 lays out the engagement requirement. - A complaint system must also be established. - There are legal consequences established to enforce compliance with the requirements of the act. It has teeth. Sinan shared learning from research programmes on resident engagement. There isn't a one size fits all when it comes to engaging with residents on Building Safety, he says. Understanding residents is the key to developing an engagement strategy. Take a step back and assess what you already know, and then see what gaps exist in your knowledge He asks the audience to consider the way they survey tenants, for instance asking about disability. As an example, he says infirm elderly mat not regard themselves as disabled. Ask things like, can you hear the alarms, he suggests, as an example. Liz, from Hyde Housing, explains what her organisation has been doing to address the issues. Hyde developed a neighbourhood model, based on findings of a pilot, and launched it in January. Developed a customer platform that it says enabled tenants to drive how they receive information. Neil talked about some of the tactical things Orbit has learned from some of its bigger projects. Examples he gives: electronic noticeboards. Also employed dedicated resident Engagement officer. "Boots on the ground are absolutely critical," he said. There us more they can, he says; deep systemic things. It didn't feel co-designed, so they are looking to work on this. He talks of the soft landing concept. Building to #NetZero means more #NetZeroBuildings but, how to build them? Insights from Building Design. by Dav Bansal this morning as it reports on the upcoming roll-out of the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (NZCBS) slated for a beta later this summer. The hope being that this new standard will allow construction organisations to report their #Emissions and #CarbonFootprint in the same way. The #NZBCS aims to limit building and construction emissions in line with the already agreed #NetZero2050 target by enforcing #CarbonBudgets that include Operational and Embodied Carbon emissions. Operational Carbon being the emissions released by standard operation of a building and embodied referring to emissions associated with the construction and maintenance of it. Participation with the the initiative - founded by organisations including the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), The Carbon Trust, RIBA and LETI - will be headed up be headed by NZBCS Chair and Chairman of Related Argent, David Partridge. It originally received over 500 industry responses to cultivate a balanced parameters based on industry benchmarks and #Decarbonisation targets with a subsequent 300 “major players in the real estate and built environment sector” engaging in countrywide workshops. As the article states “Crucially, for architects, the Standard stands to play a crucial role in turning what is currently a Net Zero ‘crusade’ into what is ‘normal’ or expected from a building” Efficient buildings will be instrumental on our #NetZeroJourney, critical for reducing demands on our infrastructure and summarily stunting #Scope2Emissions for many organisations. With work progressing, it will be exciting to see how the new benefits open opportunities for industry firms and bolster businesses elsewhere on the value-chain.
