This statistic from Gong's latest report could serve as an epitaph for sales over the past decade. We've seen an efficiency arms race that has sidelined effectiveness. Sales organisations have increasingly focused on doing things faster—less thinking, more automation—while losing sight of quality and, at times, even questioning whether their methods truly work. A prime example of this is email automation and the elusive promise of "personalisation at scale." It's the equivalent of saying, "I've streamlined my process for cleaning my teeth; I just don't do it anymore." It's time to hit the brakes on a lot of this and refocus on what truly matters: the quality of the input. Once we've nailed that, then we can think about quantity.

Guy Rubin of Ebsta shared their most recent analysis that 75% of sales reps are missing quota. Yet we will all agree, AI is changing sales. Saving time, increasing productivity, spending time with better fit prospects, identifying buying intent, focussing on winnable deals and so on. So why, with more tech, tools and AI are we getting worse collectively at selling? Sure, the car is higher. We need more pipeline coverage. Opportunities via inbound or outbound are tougher to create at the right scale for many. And we have lived through easier macro selling environments. But is AI not delivering on its promise or 🥁 🥁 🥁 do we have a different problem? Perhaps our investment in tech and AI has become imbalanced with our investment in skills and development? It always has, but perhaps now, seduced by must-have tools, we are making our under-performing teams more productive and focussed. In search of the quick-fix and promise, shiny tools promising revenue success are prioritised over the investment - internally and externally in the coaching and development needed for success. We’ve just concluded the biggest survey on coaching with our friends Aircall we believe has ever been undertaken. The results are alarming. I can’t share too much before our report is published, but the story is conclusive. Teams are woefully unsupported with the coaching they need to be successful. Perhaps coaching isn’t a AI sexy. Perhaps it isn’t a quick fix. Perhaps we don’t know how to solve it. But history shows that coaching results in growth and revenue, whilst AI collectively may be making unsupported teams more efficient and productive. More time to spend on deals they are not winning.
