On Tuesday of this week I met up with Paulina Malowaniec. Paulina and I are part of a steering group called Flourish and Paulina recently attended one of the planned visits to Dundee. She very kindly picked up a catalogue of local makers that was produced by the City of Design Dundee. But I will share more on that later as it’s a great publication well worth taking a deep dive into. Paulina and I covered a lot of subjects - something that is inevitable when two neurodivergent brains communicate. We discussed the following: ✨ The importance of lived experience within research and academia and how this truly elevates academic outcomes. ❤️‍🔥 That creativity, culture and heritage should be democratized to help communities engage with their heritage and take ownership of it. 💷 That no amount of funding can heal the gross inequalities that people are feeling in society. And if we want to develop deprived areas we must reach the people that are directly affected by gentrification. Often people see huge investment in their area but fail to see how they have benefitted from it. I have lived in Bensham in Gateshead for twenty years and have seen the regular disillusionment of local communities here. 🔗 We discussed the crucial role of small businesses that bring communities together, provide employment and support a supply chain. But the challenges of running small businesses is huge. These small businesses like The Staiths Cafe were we met for a coffee become the life blood of local communities and must be supported to thrive. This is what makes our communities unique and they become destination spaces where locals and visitors want to spend their hard earned cash. ♥️ We discussed how important it is that creatives know the value of what they contribute. From ideas, lived experience to their problem solving skills. Often creatives are not valued by society and their contribution is minimised. Knowing your value and what you bring to the table is essential. Underselling or diminishing your contribution makes it impossible for creative communities to thrive. Often creatives are recruited for ideas mining ⛏️ exercises and this is not a sustainable way of supporting the creative community. And it does not make space for innovation. Those cities and towns that support their creative communities benefit significantly in all areas of community cohesion, health & wellbeing and reducing social inequality. If you're not aware of The Stage's Future of Theatre Conference this week, do check it out. It is mentioned in a recent article by The Stage Media Company Ltd which says, "Cats was the first musical to become a globally replicated franchise and legitimised theatre investing as a credible enterprise.... Next week [25th April], The Stage’s Future of Theatre Conference will host a panel discussion with early-career commercial producers. PACT production census Plenty to go for PACT’s latest census indicates that, despite a more challenging environment for UK production companies, industry revenues remained at above pre-pandemic levels in 2023 with a large number of broadcasters commissioning content spanning multiple genres. We expect a similar situation during the current year with demand for original content providing opportunities for companies with the creative talent, resources, track record, broadcaster relationships and financial strength to capitalise. We believe this bodes well for ITV^, STV and Zinc Media^ in the production space, and are also positive on the prospects of Videndum^ and Facilities by ADF^ via their exposure to production activity.
