Embracing the digital age to enhance maternal healthcare, West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has launched a significant innovation - a dedicated app that gives expectant mothers immediate access to their maternity records. Replacing the paper-based system utilized for generations, this application is the first of its kind in Hertfordshire and West Essex, modernizing the way pregnancy, birth, and postnatal records are accessed and maintained. Called BadgerNet, it serves the dual purpose of ensuring prompt access for clinicians and minimizing the risk of vital paperwork being lost or missed. In the year since its launch, nearly 8,000 mothers have benefitted from this app. Not only does it help keep crucial health information at their fingertips, but it also allows questions to be answered by midwives before appointments, reducing anxiety during what can be an overwhelming time. An NHS spokesman has said that; “On Monday 3 June Synnovis, a provider of lab services, was the victim of a ransomware cyber attack. This is having a significant impact on the delivery of services at Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts and primary care services in south east London and we apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to patients and their families“. So this attack was on a private company contracted to provide services to the NHS, not the NHS itself, but which seems to have spread into the NHS Trust. This is has a play not only into the cyber security of the private company itself, but into the supply chain for the NHS. Supply chain security is often an issue which is ignored, and at your peril. It's a route used by cyber criminals to attack a larger organisation, via a smaller one. Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) that infects a computer or network and encrypts files, rendering them inaccessible to the user. The cybercriminal behind the ransomware then demands a ransom payment in exchange for providing the decryption key needed to unlock the files. It typically spreads through phishing emails, malicious websites, or compromised software. Once a computer or network is infected, the ransomware will display a message demanding payment in a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin in order to decrypt the files. Ransomware attacks can have a devastating effect, as it has in this case. I've said it before and I'll say it again, as often as is necessary, the first line of defence is cyber awareness training for your staff. I'm sure there'll be an investigation as to the actual cause and if you listen carefully you'll hear the sound of stable doors being slammed shut. But somehow this malware got onto their systems and it isn't a huge bet that human error was involved. It also isn't a huge bet that that particular human did something he or she didn't know they shouldn't. New report: 'Harnessing technology to address the NHS workforce challenge'.   A recent report by Public Policy Projects sheds light on how AI and digital technologies could potentially improve productivity and reduce backlogs in our healthcare system. A roundtable discussion, chaired by our CEO, Dr Hatim Abdulhussein explored the opportunities and challenges in this area. The discussion identified five key barriers to adopting AI and digital technologies in healthcare: 📝Regulation: The need for clearer guidance and communication between regulators and innovators. 🤝Partnerships: The importance of collaboration between industry and healthcare providers. 🛜Practical barriers: Challenges in IT resources, and infrastructure. 💳Funding: The need for resources to support implementation and scaling, not just pilots. 🎓Upskilling: The importance of training and development for the healthcare workforce. Despite these challenges, there's significant potential for innovation in digital health and AI in the NHS. The report also suggests that GPs could play a key role in driving technology adoption in primary care.
