Timing is everything.... Hugely proud to have worked with Nesta to produce a first-of-its-kind study on the experiences of smart prepayment customers’ with a domestic flexibility service - Utilita Energy's participation in National Grid ESO's Demand Flexibility Service with our #PowerPayback service. ESO's DFS redesign for winter 2024-25 and beyond has just been submitted to Ofgem for review/approval. If I worked at Ofgem I would be challenging how this redesign protects consumers and ensures the low carbon transition is a just one. To say that ESO's redesign will exclude prepayment households this winter is an understatement. In several instances ESO have done the exact opposite of the recommendations in this report which suggests how flexibility can be more inclusive for those that need it the most, lower income households, the vulnerable and the fuel poor. ESO have done this at a time when the price cap has just increased 10%. It’s a momentous day for National Grid as we announced around £60 billion investment in networks over the next five years, backed by a £7bn equity raise. At nearly double the investment over the last five years, this will accelerate the energy transition, decarbonisation and bolster security of supply. We’ll be building out infrastructure at a scale never seen before and streamlining our strategy to focus almost entirely on networks, with nearly 80% of our activity focused on electricity by 2029.

Sia Partners and Cadent Gas Limited are supporting the people most affected by the living crisis by designing and launching The Warm Homes Network, a new UK fuel poverty Partner Ecosystem initiative. This partnership ecosystem brings together diverse organisations to create a community of trusted partners which offers single source of support to vulnerable customers. It includes utility providers, Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, National Grid, local governments and charities as well as technology providers, Google Cloud.   We have launched initial pilots in Birmingham and Cumbria, two areas identified as having high levels of deprivation in the UK. So far, this ‘one-stop-shop’ benefits support has saved households an average of £8,950, and we are now working at scaling the programme to offer the following support to vulnerable customers across the UK: - Grants, benefits check and application support - Money management advice - Fuel and water debt advice - Energy efficiency and low carbon technology advice, in-depth assessments and retrofitting measures This is necessary as fuel poverty is an increasingly prevalent issue, illustrated by the statistics published by National Energy Action in 2023 stating that 6.5 million UK households are now predicted to be in fuel poverty from January ’24, a 31% increase from October '21. You probably didn't notice but October 1st was the launch date of the newest public institution in the UK – the 'National Energy System Operator' (NESO). The NESO replaces National Grid and is mandated with the simple task of ... "delivering electricity decarbonisation and whole energy system planning to deliver Net-Zero." This is a great initiative that has been many years in the making with cross party support. We need whole of system thinking and the NESO will have strategic oversight of both the electricity and gas systems. The first task is to take our electricity grid to net zero by 2030 which NESO say can be achieved.
