*** ONLINE TRUSTEE TRAINING COURSE *** I am pleased to announce the return of Public Leaders Appointments Trustee Training 'Understanding and Strengthening Governance' Whether you are new to being a Trustee and are wanting to learn more about the role and what you should be doing, or if you have been a Trustee for some time and want a refresh and update, then this course is for you. You will go away equipped with the tools, knowledge and confidence needed to make an effective contribution to your Board. We will be learning about the role of being a charity Trustee, both the legal and formal governance responsibilities, and also the inter-personal aspects of working with fellow Trustees, and staff. The training will involve teaching, as well as interaction and opportunities to share your own experience and explore case studies. School meals are key in: ✅️ Fighting #hunger ✅️ Driving #education ✅️ Improving the #health and #nutrition status of school children. ✅️ Promoting local #agricultural production and the #economy (a 2020 study by the School Meals Coalition Research Consortium found that in low- and middle-income countries, an average of $9 was returned by investing $1 in school meals programs).

Culture and behaviour trumps policies and procedures I enjoyed presenting the opening plenary at Charity Finance Group sold out annual conference this morning. We discussed that as finance people we focus on policies and procedures – these are very important but there is more to it than policies and procedures - without the right governance, culture and behaviour – policies and procedures can be ineffective. When I carry out governance and / or effectiveness reviews I find that boards and senior management often wrongly take for granted that the right culture and behaviour permeates through the organisation. Boards  and the senior management team need to take time to ensure that organisational culture and values are discussed as part of the board agenda and staff discussions. Ethical dilemmas need to be discussed and decisions and planned responses should be carefully reviewed. Sometimes this needs to be a theoretical discussion in anticipation of what might go wrong – for example, the risk that organisational or personal performance indicators can lead to or incentivise inappropriate behaviours. An important question is -  how are incidents of inappropriate behaviours or unwanted culture recorded, monitored and dealt with? Boards and management must work to prevent, detect and respond appropriately to poor culture / behaviour. The position in the past was that proper accountability and transparency led to unwanted publicity that should be avoided. This approach is no longer seen as appropriate and can lead to damaging consequences.
