You probably didn't notice but October 1st was the launch date of the newest public institution in the UK – the 'National Energy System Operator' (NESO). The NESO replaces National Grid and is mandated with the simple task of ... "delivering electricity decarbonisation and whole energy system planning to deliver Net-Zero." This is a great initiative that has been many years in the making with cross party support. We need whole of system thinking and the NESO will have strategic oversight of both the electricity and gas systems. The first task is to take our electricity grid to net zero by 2030 which NESO say can be achieved. This concept of trading across time in different energy markets may not be familiar to many of our Australia customers, but it does in fact exist in Australia. Western Australia has the Short-Term Energy Market (STEM), which allows market participants to buy and sell electricity in a day ahead forward market. Along with the Reserve Capacity Mechanism (RCM), the STEM is one of the features that makes the WEM much more “conventional” than the NEM, when compared with other power systems around the world.

Interesting, given that the UK grid is currently 99.9999% reliable (Ref National Grid) I wonder if there would be the same support for decentralised systems with a much lower figure. I think most people could accept short duration interruptions but few would tolerate lengthy outages. The amount of effort and work to make future systems resilient (both physical and cyber) is increasing significantly. The transition is certainly going to be interesting.

How much do households spend per retrofit? Average retrofit spend per household is not proportionate across tenure, according to a report by the National Retrofit Hub (link in comments). This suggests energy performance uplift varies by tenure. Here’s the data: Private rental: £𝟮,𝟲𝟬𝟬/𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 Delivery data difficult to access, but annual spend illustrates less effective intervention install compared to other tenures. -> Improved measurement & more comprehensive retrofit required. What is GB Energy ⚡ and why it's important for the startup ecosystem? GB Energy is the Keir Starmer and the new UK 🇬🇧 government (The Labour Party) renewable initiative: a new state-owned energy company to accelerate renewable energy. The government will invest £8.3bn 💷 into GB Energy over the next 5️⃣ years, with the intention to mobilize £60bn of private capital to the company as well. That money will go into both large and smaller scale energy projects. When we think of such an initiative, it would not only be to build new wind 🌬 power projects, but they will invest in Nuclear, CDR, Hydrogen economy, storage and more. It's important to understand what GB Energy is not ❌ - it's NOT a venture fund, and it will invest in projects mainly, and later stage and established projects. It will not invest in a new LDES tech company, so probably a seed-stage company would not get a direct investment but the likes of Greg Jackson and Octopus Energy, and will feed growth investors such as Lightrock (Pal Erik Sjatil). What it can do? it could accelerate, mainly everything in our climate ecosystem and not only in the UK, but globally. Although it is state owned, it will operate as a private business, so the push for execution and revenues is as a private company. In fact, what we should do is think about the use cases where we get stuck: grid connections, off-takes, permits all of those are things that GB Energy can accelerate - it's the UK version's IRA (but better?). If there is one thing that I have learned working with startups to leverage the IRA, in areas from hydrogen to CDR, is that it's still slow 🐢 , vague and complicated. You have to work to find a corporate parter, make the joint application, and all that jazz. If I could think of one thing GB Energy should do, is bring the startup community from day 1️⃣ to the table to work together. Forming an advisory group of investors and founders and build a team that could also bridge the large projects with the smaller companies, and the breakthrough technologies. That could not wait, for year 3 of this initiative, to build the right mechanisms to integrate innovation that would scale faster and allow them to integrate quicker to the grid. That will give a competitive advantage to the UK globally 🌏 in the climate tech space, and build the UK as the hub for both hardware and software startup companies to come to the UK and build in climate tech. Ed Miliband for Labour Leader appointed Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng who understands both the corporate world when he led Siemens UK, and worked with startups and the innovation ecosystem at Digital Catapult. The ventures ecosystem is more than open to collaborate and help build the right bridges between climate projects and technologies. We were pleased to hear from Alistair Phillips-Davies, CEO of SSE, and Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control for Clean Energy 2030, at the recent event on Security and Net Zero, hosted by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) acknowledge the scale of the ambitious targets set by the UK Government’s Clean Energy Mission for 2030. He said, "to achieve the 2030 mission, we need to raise significant funds, strengthen our supply chain, and critically bring the public along with us".
