A lot of retail candidates we’re speaking to are saying that some of the salaries being advertised simply aren’t enough – barely above minimum wage. I get it – businesses are feeling the pinch, but offering salaries in the low to mid-twenties for Store Manager roles? It’s not sustainable. 🛑 In today’s retail environment, where Store Managers are juggling operations, customer service, stock control, and team management, the salary has to reflect the responsibility. Paying just above minimum wage for such a crucial role often leads to higher turnover, low engagement, and an overall impact on team performance. What we’re seeing is that candidates are actively passing up on these opportunities – and if you’re wondering why your job ads aren’t getting the traction they used to, this might be a big reason. Why is McDonald's so important to Talent Acquisition? Because they represent the transactional service we sometimes find ourselves serving up to an organisation. But why should Amazon and like minded organisations be the only ones dining out at Michelin star restaurants? I had an enlightening TA Talks conversation with Toby Culshaw, Head of Talent Intelligence at Amazon Stores, who laid it out for me in really simple terms. Toby highlights that Talent Intelligence is equally important and achievable in smaller organisations, and if TA Pro’s can try and carve out a little more time to consult, the outcome on the investment could be 10x. The funny thing is, as an industry, we know this. A high percentage of in-house recruiters have an agency background and know the value of consulting - we just need the leadership support to claw back the time. Now I’m not advocating we hire Gordon Ramsay to run our talent functions (although he would run a tight ship), but as a sector we need to do more ‘consulting’ and less ‘transacting’, and use talent intelligence to build our business case. 📢 Calling all Hiring Managers! Let's talk about something that annoys me - not putting the salary on your job adverts! I see this all the time and incredibly frustrating for candidates when they can't see the pay being offered. What's the point?? By including the salary range in your adverts, you're saving both parties time and effort. Candidates can decide right away if the role aligns with their expectations, while you get applications from truly interested folks. Plus, it sends a clear message that your company values openness and integrity. Don't complicate the hiring process. Leave out the mystery, and be upfront about what you're offering.
