The Russian navy has launched a significant exercise involving its fleets across the Arctic and Pacific oceans, as well as the Baltic and Caspian seas. This large-scale manoeuvre, involving approximately 20,000 sailors, 300 vessels including both surface ships and submarines and 50 aircraft, aims to assess the operational readiness of various naval units. The exercises are designed to test the capabilities of the navy's command structures, ship crews, naval aviation units, and coastal troops in performing a range of military tasks, including the deployment of anti-aircraft missiles and anti-submarine warfare tactics. Notably absent from this exercise is Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which is currently engaged in the conflict in Ukraine. This fleet has faced significant challenges, particularly with adapting to modern drone warfare, resulting in substantial losses from Ukrainian missile and drone attacks. The situation has been severe enough to necessitate a withdrawal from the fleet's main base in Sevastopol, located on the annexed Crimean Peninsula. In response to these challenges and failures, the Kremlin replaced the head of the navy in March. Source: Reuters, dpa, AFP So what Global intelligence services and military commentators will likely heavily monitor the effectiveness of these drills, as they will clearly indicate the toll that Ukraine has taken on forces not directly engaged in Ukraine. Russia, well aware of this fact will want to show that it can maintain effective forces globally while engaged in a conflict. However, we would assess that it is likely this is a hollow showing, and even the Russian Navy has been significantly degraded by the conflict in Ukraine. One thing that will be interesting to see is how effective their aviation assets perform in this exercise, laying out how degraded not just their aviation platforms are but also their ground and support crew. The UK Ministry of Defence - MOD’s - (Rotary Wing Uncrewed Air Systems) RWUAS Capability Concept Demonstrator (CCD) Phase 2 contract built on the research and development activity which began under the Tactical Maritime Unmanned Air System (TMUAS) CCD programme between 2013 and 2015. Under Phase 2 further research, development, analysis and experimentation took place, which related to Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) air-vehicle technologies and platform operations, within future operating environments, fleet mixes and the overall defence aviation capability structure. Further to learnings and technology developed through the first two phases of the RWUAS programme, Leonardo is now creating a 2-3t demonstration aircraft that will have modularity at its core. As part of Phase 3a of the RWUAS CCD Phase 3 Technology Demonstrator Programme (TDP), awarded in July 2022 by the UK MOD Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) Future Capability Group (FCG), Leonardo is racing ahead with advanced research into an Uncrewed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (UVTOL) Autonomous Collaborative Platform (ACP) with the TDP anticipated to fly next year. BAE Systems has lifted its profit forecast for the full year as Britain’s defence champion continues to benefit from new orders on the back of heightened geopolitical tensions and increased military spending. The FTSE 100 group said it won just over £15bn worth of new orders in the first six months of the year, with notable contract wins for warships in Australia as well as for its Swedish-made CV90 fighting vehicles from eastern European nations. Demand has also been strong for new munitions as governments have restocked supplies sent to Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The new order haul bolstered BAE’s backlog to a record £74.1bn, which included that of the company’s recent acquisition of US space business Ball Corporation.
