In July, UX/UI design briefs saw their biggest position drop ever. Falling from its usual position in our top three down to sixth place, this represents a huge shift in ‘typical’ demand on our platform. This category was our highest performing, both value- and volume-wise, in 2023, and so it comes as a shock to see its investment deplete so suddenly this month. It made up over double of the amount of briefs in January as it did this month (13% compared to 6.3%). You know how UX and UI became replicable, templatised and expensive in the UK. And you know how digital design became less about the craft, and more about execution. Well that’s the same in New York, but changing for the better… Faster. Better for the clients. Better for the agencies. And most importantly, better for the digital talent who want to create amazing things. The need for UX, UI and digital design talent has changed. The craft has to be high, and they have to be hyper focused on improving a consumer's experience. And if it’s not that, then agencies are paying for digital talent that can impact one of four things; 3D spatial; service design; immersive experience; branding. Brands are pumping more of their agency spend into improving brand experience. Mainly across those areas mentioned. I’m in New York for the next two weeks, and I’m dedicated to find the agencies and brands that digital/product design talent will make the most impact in. Exciting times ahead to be a digital expert.

Writing a brief is something that requires thought and skill. An underrated skill! I think a lot of designers will agree with me here as we have all worked with minimal briefs, which often leads to additional rounds of amends and a lack of efficiency. In short, it's frustrating to not be communicated with properly and in the worst cases gaslit into believing we have totally misjudged the project purpose and deliverables. I've run workshops about writing briefs for in-house teams which has changed this for the better by educating the purpose and usefulness of briefs and I want to shout this information from the rooftops. Clearer briefs = Improved timelines (remember, time = money) = Strategic and Effective Design = Commercial Marketing/eCommerce Strategies

Testing a font that's currently in development. I find it hard to critic work sometimes. It's a daily thing we have to do as designers but it never seems to get easier. Today's been a frustrating mix of not being able to work out why functionality of a font isn't being brought through along with staring at letter forms asking myself "are this working, do they relate, is it working how I intended" and the usual "is this good design or is it s**t". I guess it's just the nature of design that nothing you even do will be perfect but maybe we should be content with "close enough" or "that'll do" sometimes. ... #typedesign #font #typography #design #visualcommunication #visualdesign

Theres a lot of mixed thoughts on AI in industry at the moment so it seems like the right time to share our thoughts on it. I think once we accept that it is here to stay, we can start to embrace it and realise that it is an amazing tool but AI alone doesn't have the attention to detail that a designer creates.
