Exciting times ahead for IoT and satellite connectivity.   I’ve been closely following the evolution of the IoT and its interconnection with satellite technology for many years, so I was interested to see a recent report from Juniper Research that predicts a 150% increase in the number of satellites supporting Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity over the next five years, with the total number of satellites increasing from 10,000 in 2024 to more than 24,000 in 2029.    The report highlights the critical role of multi-orbit structures, which combine the low latency of LEO satellites with the wide coverage of GEO satellites, which will be key to meeting the needs of IoT applications, from data-intensive operations to low-power, wide-area connectivity.   With the value of global satellite IoT transactions set to nearly quadruple by 2030, strategic partnerships will be essential to fill coverage gaps and provide seamless service. 📲 Strategic Overview of Operator Consolidation and Its Broader Impact 📲 Having spent much of my career working in the telco sector, I believe the potential merger of Three and Vodafone could be a pivotal event in the UK telecom sector. It has the potential to set off a chain reaction impacting market dynamics and key industry vendors. With fewer network operators, significant effects are expected across the industry, and this consolidation is not limited to UK operators. 1. Impact on Vendors 📞 Revenue Concentration: Vendors like Amdocs, Nokia, and Ericsson have the scale to survive, but smaller players like Infovista, and MYCOM OSI will face increased dependency on larger contracts with fewer operators. This will heighten financial risk and potentially drive these vendors to diversify their revenue streams, follow suit, and look at partners with whom to merge. 📞 Innovation and Margins: Reduced competition may slow innovation in tools like fault management and Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring. Additionally, vendors may face margin compression as consolidated operators exert pricing pressure that limits R&D investment. 2. Potential for Broader M&A Activity 📞 Vendor and Market Consolidation: The merger could trigger a broader wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) across the sector, with smaller operators and vendors consolidating to survive. I've written a report on the differences and synergies between 5G Network APIs and #CPaaS, on behalf of a new client, Shabodi. The theme is "Co-existence not Convergence". The download link is in the comments. The two worlds coexist, but there is limited overlap. Both sets of APIs are valuable for CSPs and other providers. But I think that with some exceptions, they are suitable for *different* groups of developers, in different situations. (Note: I'm one of few analysts who has covered both wireless networks and CPaaS). Several previous posts covered the evolution of Network APIs, especially for #5G networks. I've been watching ongoing work relating to #CAMARA and #OpenGateway initiatives - my general stance has been that they are "necessary but not sufficient", particularly for public MNO networks. I've also been skeptical of some of the quantitative forecasting of revenues, especially for quality-on-demand and #networkslicing. A key challenge I've identified is that APIs for quality are only useful in locations with sufficient, reliable network coverage and capacity - and public 5G SA networks are very patchy, especially indoors. It's been noticeable that more discussion has been about using APIs to *create* #Private5G slices from national networks, than using APIs *inside* dedicated P5G networks for industry or other use-cases. I think the latter are more important. IMO that's the immediate opportunity for fine-grained network awareness and control: specific locations where networks have been tightly engineered for relevant applications. Factories, mines, sports venues, ports, hospitals etc. Those are not the places or applications most in need of VoIP calling or SMS messaging APIs. Most CPaaS users and platforms are completely distinct to those for (wireless) network capabilities and awareness. They focus on contact centres, customer experience, messaging, or building voice/video applications with protocols like #WebRTC and SIP. Some CPaaS providers also offer APIs for email and marketing campaign management. At the moment, the main current emphasis from 5G Network API platforms appears to be on aspects such as fraud management, numbering and SIM-swaps, location and so forth. These are more plausibly "CPaaS adjacent" although developers have lots of other choices for those as well. I've long said network-aware applications are more important than application-aware networks. So APIs which give network status data to developers, and also allow them to specify requirements such as necessary latency and bandwidth, are potentially useful - as long as they apply to the right network(s). In summary - while there are some overlaps between CPaaS and Network APIs for abstraction and enablement, they fundamentally have very different characteristics. They may coexist on broader API/XaaS platforms and aggregated marketplaces, but that will be “complementary”, not “converged”. Download the report from the link & let me know what you think.

There's been a lot of publications about the #3G switch off, and this one I found pretty interesting. Vodafone, who completed their 3G switch off in February this year highlight that data transmission over #5G uses 7% less energy than that of 3G. This allows the network to connect more devices (and people), with faster speeds, a more reliable service and using far less energy to do so. EE have also completed their 3G switch off, with VMO2 to follow and eventually 3UK who do not have a 2G network (which the MNO's are presently retaining for some voice and other services). #MobileNews #MobileNetworks #UKtelecoms https://lnkd.in/dcCYXeJi

We have approached AI in telecom by empowering our experts not by promising to replace them or expecting them to be data scientists overnight. All of us are dealing with a data scientist shortage that will not get easier, so we have focused on building a platform that scales and empowers those experts, allowing them to run at speed while minimizing risk. 1. Telecom experts are too busy (don’t want) to be data scientists. 2. Mobile operators want to control their AI destinies. 3. Pure AI data platforms are not the answer.
