How do you handle challenges or changes in your hiring goals?
There are two sides to this question. When the actual numbers change (up or down, since each can be challenging for different reasons) but also when your goals are not going to be met because of a change in delivery capability. The key to it all is constant communication with your stakeholders to react to changes from them, but also to make them aware when you might not hit your goals. In the latter, always go to them with a solution, but be open to their views.

How can you navigate difficult conversations with HR consulting clients?
The key to this is actively listen without judgment to understand their perspective. When you have a clear understanding of their point of view, work with them to find common ground and reinforce shared goals while acknowledging the discomfort. Present solutions focused on reaching mutual understanding, not "winning" the debate. Though difficult, these conversations build trust and partnership when handled with sincerity. Let the client's interests guide you in navigating challenging yet necessary dialogues. NB: This is a fairly standard approach for any difficult conversation, not just an HR Consulting client

How can entrepreneurs overcome their fear of public speaking?
We rely on innate skills as entrepreneurs - I think it is about digging deep in to those to inspire an audience, the same way you may have done to inspire your first team member, your co-founder or an investor. Storytelling, taking risks, facing uncertainty and thinking on your feet are all things we do without realising it, on a daily basis. Think of it as a method of communicating your vision and educating your audience, something you do every day, and then these innate strengths will give you the skills and confidence to deliver powerful content.

DVSA was formed by a merger of two disparate Government agencies which has lead to conflicts within the merged organisation, including the way in which they recruit where there is often extreme difference of opinion in what is most important in the process - behaviours/cultural fit OR technical skills.
There are major challenges around diversity, quality of hire, time to offer, time to on-board and a new entrant training programme which has a pass/fail element leading to staff being dismissed after 5 weeks of employment.
Developing and implementing (a) new attraction strategy (b) innovative end-to-end selection process and (c) scoping data tool to improve diversity, time to hire and ultimately quality of applicants in a volume recruitment environment.
Managing key stakeholders expectations both in the Operations BU and HR whilst working with process owners/delivery teams to identify impact of proposed changes and devise new processes to enable improvements.
- New selection tool scoped and supplier identified - this will have a major positive impact time to start (current 27 weeks v targeted 6 weeks), resource requirements in the recruitment process (currently 4 hires = 13 FTE days vs target 4 hires = 1 FTE day), quality of hire (currently 27% of candidates fail initial training v target = 0% fail initial training), remove current bias in selection which, for example, sees almost twice the percentage of male applicants pass selection compared to female applicants.
- Marketing strategy planned for increasing awareness of the Driving Examiner role across a broader candidate base. -
