What is the most secure way to manage mobile devices?
Modern mobile devices are encrypted by default. External media on the other hand, should your device support it, may not be. Through MDM/EMM/UEM (pick your acronym), you can ensure policies enforce encryption for the entire mobile estate, and prevent the use of SD card/external media at the same time. This ensures the only storage locations permitted by the organisation are either locally encrypted, or remote cloud locations benefitting the same.

You’re always on the go. How can you make your mobile device work for you?
App versions can be rolled back with relative ease and speed. OS versions? Not outside of specific enterprise solution scenarios. I'll advocate for the updating of devices to maintain security and benefit from new features forever, but to counter the advice here for people who are always on the move (ie, limited downtime/resources), a bad update will cripple productivity and cause communication issues galore. If you rely on your device as a mission-critical asset, take the enterprise approach: there's no reason a pending update can't be ignored for a few days while the rest of the market field-test it for stability. It's continued availability after a period of time will signal no reported issues have caused the OEM to pull the update.

AV and anti-Malware apps offer limited benefits and can instead negatively impact battery life and performance, especially if not from a known/trusted company. For Android, Google's Play Protect should normally be enough, leaning on the combined expertise of members of the App Defense Alliance (appdefensealliance.dev) for potentially harmful apps (PHA) protection. Combined with Safe browsing in Chrome for known bad sites (more safety on Android here - android.com/safety), and you've got a decent basic setup. Threat defence solutions from the likes of Lookout, Zimperium, etc offer network security, with phishing protection & traffic monitoring built in; often the more effective form of protection for mobile devices.

You’re always on the go. How can you make your mobile device work for you?
I find little to be more cumbersome when switching between multiple devices than dealing with local storage. If you're a serial switcher then leaning on shared or cloud storage is the way to keep things centrally managed. Whether that's public cloud or your own NAS/Nextcloud server for improved privacy, it makes a significant difference. App organisation is neither here nor there. Do what works for you; my app drawer opens to the search input and I type for the app I want which negates any obsessing over location or placement, but work how you feel comfortable. If distractions are an issue with non-work apps, consider leaning on focus modes or Do Not Disturb while you're working, no one should need to uninstall apps for this.

Travelling light while prioritising productivity is a perfect scenario for leaning on the various desktop modes Android devices offer - Samsung DeX, Moto ReadyFor, etc. Pack a dongle for HDMI connectivity & a travel mouse and/or keyboard, and you have a solution to connect to any display that takes up far less space than packing a laptop. If that's too clunky for you, consider a foldable that'll open up into a semi-tablet experience, no display necessary 😎 Good shout on headphones and charger/battery bank also.

How can you ensure high quality work on mobile devices?
Whether you're a contractor, self-employed, or running a fortune business, this sort of device-level security is the absolute minimum for securing data. If you're serious about data protection and endpoint security, seeking out an EMM/UEM platform for yourself or your company for anyone working from mobile devices is a must. Without this there is little control, visibility, and insight into the data stored, how it is accessed, nor with whom it can be shared, moreover risks to devices themselves through malware, poor security posture (root/jailbreak) or other device-level threats may go unnoticed and allow attackers to gain access both to data stored and internal services used by the company. This is ultimately what needs protection.

Professional Musician - Various
Tuba/Bass Trombone player
- PresentI am a professional-level musician playing in Ensembles around Europe with over 15 years of experience. Whilst my preference is smaller ensembles, I have played for numerous large Orchestras, Brass Bands, Jazz Bands, Wind Bands and Military-Standard Parade Bands. I specialise in Tuba and Bass Trombone, though play most lower Brass instruments. I'm always looking for somewhere to play, if you have a band I'd love to hear from you.

Cyber Incidents: To what extent does seasonality play a role in security monitoring? 🤔 We spoke to Cyber Incident Responder, Vanessa Horton, for her views on what role seasonality (like weekdays vs weekends, for example, or Black Friday) play in her role: Oh, seasonality plays a role, for sure. Black Friday is the perfect example. If you’re a retailer, you’re going to see way more web traffic than usual. You must be able to handle that. By having more people on call, for example. By double-checking things. You need to plan ahead and assess the risks. Again, a smart threat actor will target your weakest link, and when you’re at your most vulnerable. So, if they wanted to take your website down, for example, with a DoS attack [denial of service], a day like Black Friday is a prime time to target, when traffic is up anyway, and it’ll take fewer additional requests to flood your servers. Black Friday is also a great time [from the attacker’s perspective] to cause most harm. If your website isn’t operating that day, you’ll take a massive financial hit in terms of lost sales. Shocking News!! A recent cyberattack against NHS provider Synnovis, has led to more than 1,100 planned operations and 2,100 outpatient appointments getting postponed. The group who carried out the attack, a Russian group called Qilin, have also reportedly published almost 400GB of data, including patients names, dates of birth, NHS numbers, and blood test descriptions. For me, this story reminds me just how ruthless cyber criminals are, how damaging (and potentially life-threatening) cyber crime can be, and how important it is for all of us in businesses and not-for-profit organisations to fight back! And, when I say fight back, that doesn’t just mean installing the latest cyber security software and sitting back… …it also means getting staff trained on how to spot and avoid potential attacks, and how they can lessen the damage if an attack happens, especially when you consider that a staggering 95% of cyber attacks are down to human error - a fact you can read more about in the link below ⏬ https://lnkd.in/gVUF3YyY If you’d like to get your staff trained in cyber awareness, call 01525 331060 to speak directly to me or one the JamCrackers team about our affordable, online Cyber Awareness Training. www.jamcrackers.co.uk #CyberSecurity #NHSCyberAttack #DataBreach #StaySafe

Did you know ransomware attacks shot up by 67% last year? Scary. Ransomware is where criminals remove your access to your own data, and you must pay a large fee to get it back. Sticking to the old ways of data protection isn't enough anymore. So how do you keep your business safe? I believe you need to build cyber resiliency. It's about more than just stopping attacks; it's about bouncing back quickly if something happens. New frameworks and regulations focus on this resilience – preventing, detecting, and quickly recovering from attacks. Focus on making sure you have the right security tools, educate your team, and stay updated on the latest threats. Is it time you had a security audit on your business? I can help - get in touch. #CyberSecurity #BusinessSafety #CyberResilience https://lnkd.in/ebaZSwyg

Sharing as I am sure this will be of great interest to my NI network. Everyone will know about the PSNI data breach in August 2023, the largest data breach in UK policing history and obviously particularly damaging and dangerous in NI. It will go on to cost £25 million in total costs. The breach had a catastrophic impact on peoples lives resulting in staff moving home, changing career and damaging employee confidence, relationship and mental health. Steve T. provides an explanation on how the breach occurred and learnings from the subsequent investigations and reports. Interesting to here Steve's comments on Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools, probably what a lot of IT and Infosec professionals would be thinking of here, and that these tools aren't the answer alone. The big take away for me is the lack of senior ownership of data protection and information security. It seems these areas where being paid lip service at best in PSNI. I think their SMT will have a very different view on its importance now. It shouldn't take the proverbial to hit the fan for data and information security to be an identified, prioritised and managed risk. But, this seems to be the case in many organisations, even this one that really should have been good at this stuff.
