Looking for a real life, on the ground, example of sustainable self sufficiency?
Look no further 👇🏻
On Friday I had the pleasure of speaking at the first Sustain Britain conference 🌳
Unlike other sustainability conferences, this took a different approach.
Yes, we spoke about the problems that we're faced with, and the challenges of tackling those problems.
Yes, there were some wishy washy ideas that were never going to be scalable and implemented quick enough to actually tackle the issues.
BUT! 💡
The main focus was 'circled' around an actionable, implemented, solution.
Sustain Wiltshire, backed by Crapper and Sons Ltd, are innovating a brilliant solution for landfill circularity.
But it goes further than that.
🔄 The whole focus was how can we make hype localised communities self-sufficient.
Nick Ash, the brilliant mind behind the idea, has been working with his team to implement the idea of "Circles".
This isn't in itself a particularly radically new idea, as discussed by Jonathon Porritt - founder of Forum for the Future, prev. Green Party of England and Wales & Friends of the Earth 🌎
But the reason it is particularly interesting is that they're already working on implemented operations that actually do create self sufficiency in the local community.
The main pillars for these circles ot have self-sufficiency are:
🏡 Housing
🌽 Food
👨🏼💼 Employment & Economy
⚡️ Energy
And already 3 of these are being heavily implemented in the area.
The future will look into housing which they already have a roadmap and plan for implementation!
The official manifesto will be released in the near future, but I heavily encourage people to start following this journey.
What was particularly important was the focussed conversations:
🫱🏻🫲🏼 Sustainable Anarchy, hosted by the ever engaging, Jarvis Smith FRSA
🌊 Community & a collective mission, hosted by Roz Savage MBE
🙋🏼♂️ Localisations vs Globalisation, hosted by moi!
🌳 Implementing sustainable self sufficiency, hosted by the inspiring, Jonathon Porritt
Followed by breakout groups with the audience.
I personally loved that fact that on my table of 10 we had everything from: investors, strategic officers, marketing, tech developers, local councillors, and government advisors.
Already proving that expertise can be far more localised than it already is.
And with most of these conferences its all very complimentary of each other. But with this one it was an open discussion with criticism, challenges, and debate, which is absolutely needed to iterate the best way forward!
Hope is just next door 💪🏻
