From land to oceans! The African Union Maritime Strategy and South Africa’s Operation Phakisa are prioritising the ‘blue’/ocean-based economy, as the next investment and development frontier. However; whilst several reports, manifestos and pilot projects exist; limited attention focuses on ensuring a maritime future via education, training and research. To overcome increasing disruption from increasing automation and digitisation for shipping; logistics and the future of general work the Fourth Industrial Revolution needs to revitalise maritime education, research and training via IT access; Cloud computing, “Big Data”, simulators, resources and changing students/lecturer/labour sector processes; especially for maritime education and training. The COVIID19 pandemic created unprecedented demand for remote work and education via online and distance methods; with few existing sectors prepared. In direct response, this article summarises insights from a Moses Kotane Institute invited speaker from Africa’s first 4th IR Summit in Durban 2019; Durban University of Technology lecturing experience and advice given at a policy level on Establishing Operation Phakisa. This article overcomes Africa’s existing constraints to achieving the blue economy; via evaluating existing education in Literature Review. It provides a exploratory framework method via existing studies and surveying 250 students in a SA case study; to overcome existing gaps and maritime education/training challenges related to the 4th IR. It focuses on the need to transform education, students and economy to online and digitisation techniques; whilst expanding it to consider other emerging blue economy sectors in SA and beyond; to ensure sufficient supply, overcoming a scarcity of demand. As Covid 19 has provided unprecedented demand and new funds pledged it remains essential to redirect resources so MET and Research can futureproof our economy and people against increasing 4th IR global disruption.

CORSIA Update: Verra, Gold Standard Await Full Approval, Prices Soar! Leading carbon credit registries, including Verra, Gold Standard, Social Carbon and Climate Action Reserve have received conditional approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for Phase 1 (2024-2026). The American Carbon Registry and the Architecture for REDD Transactions are the only registries with full approval for Phase 1. Market Reaction: The news sent shockwaves through the carbon market. Following ICAO's announcement, CORSIA futures surged significantly, exceeding 100% in just two days to reach $20 per ton. This price increase likely reflects the perceived tightening of credit availability as airlines have fewer options for approved offsets. Impact on Airlines: This delay affects airlines' ability to utilize carbon offsets issued by Verra, Gold Standard, and other major registries for CORSIA compliance in Phase 1. This could potentially impact early participation and project development for airlines seeking to offset their emissions. Reason for Conditional Approval: ICAO identified areas requiring improvement in these registries' processes, particularly regarding credit accounting and avoiding double-counting of emission reductions under UN guidelines. Verra, Gold Standard, and other registries have until April 15th, 2024 to address ICAO's concerns and resubmit their documentation. A final decision on their full eligibility for CORSIA Phase 1 is expected by September 2024. UNEP FI Bridges Theory and Practice - New risk centre builds on existing climate and nature risk programmes, encouraging a holistic approach to sustainability challenges. The UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative’s (UNEP FI) has opened a new risk centre centralising its resources on climate and nature risks, aiming to help members better identify and manage the ones that are financially material. The centre will offer an integrated set of programmes that build on the legacy of UNEP FI’s piloting work on the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) – bringing global and regional financial institutions up to speed on risk-related topics and helping them further their sustainability journey. “The risk centre will collate a wide set of resources for UNEP FI members, including tools, data sources, case studies, and other good practices on environmental risks, and will offer peer and expert discussion sessions on emerging topics such as new climate scenarios and evolving regulatory frameworks,” David Carlin, Head of Climate Risk and TCFD at UNEP FI, told ESG Investor. “In addition to leveraging the convening power of the UN, the risk centre will develop approaches and good practices in fields such as nature-related financial risk assessment and legal and regulatory risks through dedicated working groups.” Initially bringing together UNEP FI’s work on nature and climate, the centre will extend its focus to cover other sustainability risks, such as pollution and social issues – including those relating to the Just Transition. Its activity will take different forms. The centre will host working groups focusing on the development of risk management tools and technical skill-building workshops – with goals to implement emerging methodologies and risk management frameworks, and to enhance disclosure capabilities. Monthly webinars will also facilitate engagement between risk professionals and wider stakeholders, including central banks, supervisors and industry experts. In addition, a knowledge hub will share resources on assessing risks. “By bridging theory and practice, the centre will equip financial institutions to make informed decisions, mitigate risks, and seize emerging sustainability opportunities,” UNEP FI said in a statement. “While the risk centre is primarily for risk management professionals, it will also serve as a resource for sustainability managers, corporate legal services, portfolio management and modelling, compliance, front office professionals – as well as those seeking guidance and information.” Founded over 30 years ago, UNEP FI has been working with banks, insurers, and investors since 2017 to develop approaches and resources to help financial institutions identify, measure, disclose and manage climate-related risk, in line with the Financial Stability Board’s TCFD recommendations – which now form part of the I
