A few reflections upon leaving Nairobi after the latest round of meetings under the CBD. 1,5 years after the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework or #BiodiversityPlan, the euphoria and ambition to dare dream and agree to the changes needed to deliver a sustainable future for nature and people seem long gone. Governments have fallen back into old routines of those advocating for careful progress and those blocking - repeating arguments we have all heard time and again. Negotiators still have numerous open agenda items to get through having debated endlessly over inconsequential text, and it seems unlikely that SBI-4 will conclude tomorrow as planned. The road to COP16 in October in Cali appears destined to be paved with [brackets in brackets]. I find myself questioning the added value of engaging in the CBD at the global level at this point in time as civil society. Would the outcomes be even worse if we weren’t here – very likely – but even as we push to find support amongst governments on critical issues, we are barely scratching the surface which the urgency of the task in front of us requires. 2030 is around the corner. We now have just over six years to halt biodiversity loss and set nature on the road to recovery. Another Aichi failure cannot be in the cards. If the CBD processes are no longer fit for purpose to ensure delivery of the KM-GBF, we must both champion the change needed across the Convention as well as double-down on efforts to implement the Biodiversity Plan through other means. Across the BirdLife International Partnership we are driving action from local to global with every effort contributing to the delivery of the #BiodiversityPlan. We must continue to be optimistic that together with those governments and stakeholders who are also ready to walk the talk, we will be able to change the way the world works. #biodiversitycrisis #climatecrisis

Leave no one behind (LNOB) is the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals but unequal access to WASH is still a challenge in the WASH sector. The 2022 report from the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) shows that inequalities in WASH were pronounced in the 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. A large proportion of the rural population lacks access to basic services compared to the urban population (JMP, 2022). How do we bridge this gap?
