Earlier this month a number of UK news outlets and newspapers picked up on the Labour Govt's proposals for the 'Right to Switch Off' and the effect on presenteeism and working from home on productivity. Employees should have the right to switch off from work and should not be contactable when they choose not to be. However, working from home for those that can do it has blurred the lines for when people are working and not as many chose the hours that suit and this can be confusing. It's not just the employers responsibility, we as employees should also adhere to 'switch off' time and not respond out of our chosen work hours. Working from home (WfH) and productivity can be positive, but it wont be the case for everyone. For some, the time at home can be a positive factor on your mental health and productivity, but for others it can be isolating and lead to poor mental health and lower productivity. I did research several years back on presenteeism and the financial impact on productivity is close to that of employees being off sick. There are many factors that can lead to presenteeism from the type of work that you do, to how you are valued and perceived, to your mental health and wellbeing and so on. However, you can still suffer presenteeism if you WfH so this may not be a solution. Employers need to look at the causal factors of this and find solutions at the individual level rather than apply the same work practices for everyone. Can I be honest with you? Since we launched our Automotive Recruiters division, the feedback on our RETAINED recruitment service has been incredible. Seriously. (read on if you're a dealership) A lot of dealer groups who have been using a number of contingency agencies for years took the plunge into retained and will never look back. Especially for those harder to fill roles, it just makes sense! Let's face it, if you have a number of agencies looking to fill a role with no guarantee they'll be the first to you with a CV, this leads to either poor candidates (and candidate experience) or a lack of screening and outb ound work to find good people.
