With the UN’s recent announcement that it opposes companies using carbon credits to address their carbon footprints, I’m again reminded of the mixed messages out there about the need to scale carbon removal, especially from a policy perspective.  According to the Financial Times, a draft document from the UN says “groups should not use carbon credits to offset emissions outside of state-regulated schemes.” At the same time, the process of integrating carbon offsets into top-level carbon policy has been slow to take off. Unlike ‘traditional’ avoidance offsetting, CDR tackles past emissions and can counteract unavoidable emissions, making it a vital complement to emission reduction efforts. Weaving CDR into existing carbon regulations - like Emissions Trading Systems for instance - would provide security and incentives for buyers to invest long-term. So, how could CDR be integrated into an ETS without compromising reduction efforts? ▶️ One approach is partial integration, where regulators limit the amount of CDR that counts against emissions reductions or adjust the emissions cap. Making one CDR unit worth less than one emission allowance, could help balance reduction and removals. ▶️ Alternatively, a separate Removal Trading System (RTS) could create a dedicated market for CDR. This would mandate entities to perform or purchase increasing amounts of CDR units, ensuring predictable scaling of carbon removal efforts. The way forward will require meticulous policy design and a huge focus on due diligence, but there are definitely feasible pathways out there to build a sustainable market and reach Net Zero in time. “The Emissions Gap Report 2024”, prepared by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), critically assesses the global shortfall between current #greenhousegasemissions (GHG) and the levels needed to meet the #ParisAgreement’s temperature goals. With the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due in 2025, the report underscores that current commitments and actions are insufficient to limit #globalwarming to 1.5°C or even 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The report advocates for a substantial escalation in mitigation efforts and more stringent climate policies. Key Findings: 1. Record-High Emissions: In 2023, global GHG emissions reached an all-time high of 57.1 GtCO2e, reflecting a 1.3% increase from the previous year, driven largely by #energyproduction, #transportation, #agriculture, and #industry. 2. Disparities Among Major Emitters: The #G20countries alone contributed 77% of #globalemissions, highlighting significant disparities in per capita emissions and historical contributions. Developing nations, while responsible for a small fraction of emissions, bear disproportionate #climaterisks. 3. Insufficient NDCs and Policy Gaps: Despite previous commitments, most countries remain off-track to meet their 2030 goals. Under current policies, projected 2030 emissions exceed targets by several gigatons of #CO2e, underscoring the need for urgent policy enhancements. 4. Urgent Need for Accelerated Action: Immediate action could significantly lower warming projections. Enhanced and fully implemented #NDCs could potentially cap global warming at 2.6°C by the century’s end, compared to over 3°C under existing policies. 5. Sectoral Mitigation Potential: Cost-effective mitigation, particularly through renewable energy expansion, improved forest management, and demand-side efficiency, could significantly reduce emissions by 2030 and 2035. #UNEP’s report calls for bold climate actions, including a sixfold increase in #climateinvestments and strengthened international support for emerging economies. Achieving these targets requires comprehensive strategies in #renewableenergy, #energyefficiency, and sustainable land use practices to bridge the emissions gap and mitigate the worst impacts of #climatechange.

Forests continue to capture carbon despite challenges The world’s forests have absorbed more than 100 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide over the past three decades, but they need more protection, according to a new study. Professors Oliver Phillips and Simon Lewis from the School of Geography contributed to the tropical component of the global study, which assessed how the most carbon-rich, species-rich forests have responded to climate change and other threats since 1990. The study, entitled “The enduring world forest carbon sink,” is published in Nature. It combined long-term ground measurements with remote sensing data to measure the volume of carbon dioxide absorbed by forests across the world. The results showed that forests have absorbed more than 100 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide over the past 30 years, nearly half of the carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels over the same period. Forests remain an essential part of climate change mitigation. However, they are facing threats from deforestation and wildfires. The original proposal from the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) would have let industrial owners off the hook on reporting on GHG Protocol Scope 3 emissions, making any such monitoring and measuring voluntary. This would have been a grave mistake, as the only possible way to ever achieving anything close to Net Zero, is a full and clear accounting of embodied carbon in all materials and products. In the Age of the #ClimateEconomy, @SBTi getting itself back on track is #missioncritical to any meeting of #GHGemissions targets, whether voluntary or regulatory in nature.
