I am delighted to announce that Dr Mike C Jackson OBE will be presenting at Imperial College's forthcoming "Leading Systemic Innovation in Healthcare" executive education programme. His session, titled "Introduction to Critical Systems Thinking" will make the case that the legacy top-down, siloed and mechanistic model that has so dominated public sector and healthcare thinking is no longer the right frame for the complex challenges of health in the 21st century. Professor Mike Jackson is a globally renowned expert in systems thinking, particularly critical systems thinking. His work has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of complex systems and how we can navigate and manage them effectively. As a distinguished academic and practitioner, he brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insights that are highly relevant to the challenges facing the healthcare sector today. Mike's career is marked by a deep commitment to exploring and applying systems thinking principles to solve real-world problems. His expertise spans various fields, and his innovative approaches have helped countless organisations better understand and address the complexities inherent in their operations. Mike will provide a comprehensive overview of critical systems thinking, a framework that integrates different systems methodologies to address complex and multifaceted problems. This introduction will equip participants with the foundational knowledge needed to apply these principles effectively. The healthcare sector, with its intricate web of stakeholders, processes, and outcomes, can greatly benefit from systems thinking. Mike will illustrate how critical systems thinking can be applied to healthcare to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and patient outcomes. Healthcare systems are often beset by complex challenges that require nuanced and multi-perspective solutions. Mike's approach emphasises the importance of understanding these complexities and developing strategies that are both adaptive and robust. One of the strengths of critical systems thinking is its interdisciplinary nature. He will highlight how integrating insights from various disciplines can lead to more comprehensive and sustainable solutions in healthcare. This session will be an invaluable opportunity to delve into the principles and practices of critical systems thinking. It also coincides with the publication of his new book outlining the practical implementation of critical systems thinking. This will not only enhance our understanding of systemic issues in healthcare but also provide practical tools and methodologies that can better navigate the complexities of healthcare and enable us to work towards creating systems that are more resilient, responsive, equitable and patient-centred. https://lnkd.in/dnVGSDVB #CriticalSystemsThinking #HealthcareInnovation #SystemsThinking #NHS #Health #Complexity

I had the privilege of attending the Advancing Dementia Innovation event, hosted by the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and Alzheimer's Society. This gathering highlighted the profound intersection between innovation and care, particularly in dementia, reminding me of the NHS’s vision of not just treating patients, but transforming their lives through creative solutions. Since early 2023, my own work has centred around therapeutic arts across various wards at Charing Cross Hospital. There, I have witnessed how creativity - whether through art, fashion, or design - can act as a bridge between physical recovery and emotional healing. These moments of patient connection, where a simple act of creation can alleviate pain or restore a sense of control, have reaffirmed for me that art is not a luxury in healthcare but a necessity. Attending the event felt like a philosophical alignment between my journey and the NHS’s larger mission. Healthcare innovation isn’t merely about fostering new products or technologies; it’s about reshaping the ethos of care itself. The stories shared at the event were a testament to the belief that true innovation is born from empathy and a deep understanding of human experience, not just from the mechanics of invention. My time working within environments that have not always embraced diverse perspectives, has taught me that resilience often comes from within - the quiet courage to persist in spaces that challenge you. This is why the work I do, particularly with patients recovering from cancer, major surgery, and stroke, resonates so deeply. It reflects the larger truth that healthcare innovation must encompass the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. I am honoured to continue this journey, committed to the NHS’s mission of advancing patient care through innovation, and inspired by the shared belief that, together, we can craft new narratives in healthcare that are as innovative as they are compassionate. 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘥 #HealthcareInnovation #TherapeuticArts #DementiaCare #ArtInHealthcare #NHS #EmotionalHealing #PatientCare #CreativeTherapy #Inclusivity https://lnkd.in/eG-kiR4u

We are excited to announce two new PhD projects, part of the first DRIVE-Health PhD project call and partnered with Science Card – a new online banking start-up dedicated to accelerating science and innovation. Over the next nine years DRIVE-Health will generate 85 PhD studentships focusing on research into the application of health data, and with the potential for significant impact on the delivery of healthcare worldwide. Professor Vasa Curcin, Co-Director of DRIVE-Health and Professor in Health Informatics at King's said, "Science Card’s model is very well suited to what DRIVE-Health is doing, as we are operating across several research areas and not restricted to a single question, or a single field. Outputs of our PhD students are of broad importance, and will have a massive impact on the quality of life for people in the UK and internationally." https://lnkd.in/en_dmCD9 I recognise the crisis facing British Universities, but disagree with the reporter pinpointing the origin of the problem being in 2017. This existential crisis started with a fundamental "sell off commercialisation" that devalued higher education and which was recognised by some over a decade ago ( https://lnkd.in/g2VQ6Gv) #highereducation #UniversitiesUK
