Further readings: How Cancer Research UK (CRUK) fails to foster positive research culture https://lnkd.in/dqmeribx Highlights: 1) Prompted by broader conversations in society in the wake of the #MeToo movement, and a number of cases in science in which bullying behaviour had gone unchecked for too long, we questioned whether there was more we could do as a funder to have a positive influence on the working environment for research 2) Every situation will be unique, and some misconduct will be subtler and more difficult to spot than others. But everyone in our community should be certain that we expect everyone to treat each other with dignity and respect, and that no- one is exempt. People should feel able to speak up about any concerns they may have, without fear of limiting their careers — and any investigatory processes need to be fair, timely and transparent. Institutions should also train and support those in positions of responsibility when it comes to difficult conversations or those tricky human resources (HR) situations that can arise 3) We know that funders and research institutions have not always got this right in the past, which is why we are now committed to doing all we can to ensure our research environments are free from bullying and harassment. We believe that the more this issue is talked about, the faster we can start to change what may be perceived as cultural ‘norms’. This drug was developed by Astex Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca in a project where structural biology was key.
