Around the globe, democratic elections have been marred by election-related violence from voter intimidation to assaults at the polls and violent protests in the post-election phase.

The Explaining and Mitigating Electoral Violence project will deliver innovative tools and research to support electoral management bodies, international organizations and development practitioners in keeping elections secure.

Delving deep into the factors that contribute to electoral violence, the comprehensive research project will analyze data from elections globally in which violence occurred and develop best practices for preventing, managing and mediating it. The project will produce the world’s largest electoral violence database to date.

In partnership with King’s College London , the project leader, Creative’s Electoral Education and Integrity team will develop an interactive web-based early warning tool that allows practitioners to identify the warning signs of electoral violence.

The project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Life-long Learning For People In Development
Around the world, learning is increasingly online or blended (part in-person, part virtual). Whether it is formal education, life and job-skills training or professional or personal development, people around the world seek timely, high-quality learning to expand their knowledge and skills.

More and more, for reasons of economics, logistics, access or simply ease and familiarity of use, learners are getting their learning on the go through computers and mobile devices. The need and hunger for learning and capacity development is great.

There are 58 million teachers globally who need to continuously update their skills – including skills for utilizing technology in their classrooms – and a worldwide need for another 10 to 35 million trained teachers. Around the world, 357 million youth are out-of-work or out-of school. And, a growing cadre of 1 to 2 million development assistance professionals are working to help bring the world’s billion poorest out of poverty. The need is greater than ever to connect “people in development” to resources that can build their capacities.

CreativeU is Creative Associates International’s portal and process for customized capacity building. CreativeU is a responsive e-learning platform that connects relevant courses, resources and professional colleagues, mentors and experts to the people and organizations who need them.

CreativeU connects teachers, professionals in development and youth working to improve their lives and communities around the world to high-quality online and mobile content for career improvement and lifelong learning. CreativeU’s process of user group identification and needs analysis, and development of relevant localized and contextualized content, allows for targeted solutions to well-defined populations for effective capacity building.

    Workforce Development Program
Afghanistan is plagued by a gap between the number of Afghans who possess mid-level technical and business management skills and the market demand for these skills. To fill this void, companies typically import labor from neighboring Iran or Pakistan, taking jobs away from Afghans and driving up unemployment, which is as high as 40 percent.

The Afghanistan Workforce Development Program is increasing job placements and wages by improving access to quality technical and business training, as well as job placement support services.

Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Afghanistan Workforce Development Program introduces a market-driven job training model. Instead of the traditional model in which training centers offer classes based on what they think the market seeks, this program invites employers to customize trainings based on their actual needs.

The result is a system that provides unemployed people, as well as mid-level employees, with the training that aligns with both individual and company demands.

Private sector training centers participating in the Afghanistan Workforce Development follow a four-stage process: assessing the needs of employers; creating relevant curricula; conducting training for qualified applicants; and finally providing employment services to ensure graduates find jobs or improve their employment status.

Since its inception, more than 32,000 Afghans have been trained through these private sector centers, and more than 21,000 of the graduates have found work, received promotions and/or increased their wages. The program has exceeded its goal of 25 percent female participation – reaching more than 11,000 women with training.

Nicaraguan youth complete an average of six years of schooling. Along the Caribbean coast, youth average less than three years of schooling. This not only results in a youth population with low levels of productivity and high unemployment rates, but also constrains economic development.

Vulnerable youth who lack access to opportunities to develop critical skills needed for employment are at risk of engaging in crime, gang activity and drugs. Although some employment and livelihoods opportunities exist, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions often do not provide vulnerable youth with appropriate technical and soft skills that align with employment opportunities, nor do they offer access to quality training, job placement services and jobs.

To break this negative cycle, Creative is strengthening the private TVET system while enhancing citizen security through the Technical Vocational Education and Training Strengthening for At-Risk Youth (TVET SAY) program, with support from the CARANA Corporation. The program will support a cadre of at-risk youth, both in the Pacific and the Caribbean coasts, with vocational skills, life skills, work readiness skills, and soft skills training that they need to become capable employees and entrepreneurs.

The national program will strengthen eight TVETs and develop and bolster five TVET networks with the capabilities, tools, and resources to provide at-risk youth with quality services that empower them with high-quality, demand-driven training so they can get a good job and launch a successful career. It will do so in part by mobilizing Nicaragua’s private sector with win-win opportunities whereby business gains productive employees, and at-risk youth find new opportunities.
