Good coverage in the Telegraph and Bloomberg today of the latest Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN) quarterly independent sector NHS acute activity report. It shows that the sector is now delivering nearly 1 in 5 NHS-funded operations and in just the first five months of 2024 the sector has taken 750k people off the NHS planned care waiting list. This doesn't include all of the NHS patients treated or diagnosed by independent sector providers within NHS acute facilities so this number will be considerably higher. More can still be done and we have set out our thoughts on how to achieve that but pleasing to see the sector is making such a big contribution to NHS acute recovery as well as the fantastic work the sector is doing in primary and community care. https://lnkd.in/eZAdpBqb

Top expert in NHS data usage, Jessica Rose Morley, PhD, took to X.com with a pithy dissection of how that data is being collected and shared. “A fundamental problem is that NHS, health, social care, & public health data (you need ALL) are stored in 00s siloed wide but shallow databases, and flowing all over the place. We need to focus on *depth* not just *breadth*. “... policy must focus on quality. Giving researchers broader access to poor quality, missing, messy, uncurated, ill-formatted etc. data will not achieve much.” Is the penny finally dropping for her policymaker audience? Over and over again, those policymakers have told NHS organisations: “here’s a specification, send this data to us”, followed inevitably by expressions of astonishment that the resulting data submissions are riddled with inconsistency and error. Yet they knew full well that the data was coming from a huge variety of IT systems, all configured differently. There is no magic wand for good data quality. Every field and every data table have to be consistent and correct in both structure and meaning, which Insource’s Unified Data Layer (UDL) achieves after around two dozen meticulous transformations, with localisations injected at the right stage along the way. And it’s why we don’t take derived fields on trust, instead we recalculate things like age and responsible commissioner afresh using the correct rules. The NHS is now embarking on a new wave of data collection and aggregation, to be used for many things like performance management, research, and local analytics. Those organisations who submit data in the usual way will get the usual result. The NHS Community Health Services Data Plan contains a clear vision to provide a 'single source of the truth'. It states that data about community health services must be relevant, good quality, linkable, consistently defined and of low burden for providers to collect. NHS England has said it will develop an aligned, strategic approach to primary and community data development that supports integrated care by March 2026 - but progress can be made now, especially with EPR interoperability. The guidance states that limited #interoperability of provider IT systems and complex information governance (IG) procedures make it difficult to deliver and plan joined up, integrated care locally.
