Commercial microwave links (CMLs) from cellular telecommunication networks can provide a valuable ‘opportunistic’ source of high-resolution space-time rainfall information, complementing traditional in-situ measurement devices (rain gauges, disdrometers) and remote sensors (weather radars, satellites). The paper demonstrates how the open-source R package RAINLINK is employed to retrieve CML rainfall maps covering the majority of Sri Lanka for a 3.5 month period based on CML data.

This research focuses on tropical CML rainfall estimation in Lagos, Nigeria. This African megacity has a dense network of CMLs and few official measurement stations, making it an interesting area to study the effectiveness of urban CML precipitation measurements in such a region. The study shows result from the use of open-source R package RAINLINK to obtain 15-min rainfall maps based on data from a few thousand CMLs during the rainy season.

The GSMA AgriTech’s Digital Agriculture Maps report (DAMs), produced in collaboration with IDH Farmfit, offers a snapshot into the digital agriculture landscape in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). This toolkit is a step by step guide for mobile operators and VAS providers to design and launch Agricultural Value-added Services (Agri VAS) for the fast growing rural market. Following a user-centred design approach to product development, we present a suite of tools to support service providers in developing relevant and commercially viable services.
