Making a second consecutive appearance on the Hotlist, Business Travel Association chief executive Clive Wratten remains one of corporate travel's strongest voices in this industry's fight for survival in the first instance and latterly the ability to travel without undue restrictions. Between collecting countless accolades for his efforts – including the Outstanding Contribution to Business Travel gong and a standing ovation at last autumn's Business Travel Awards Europe – Wratten carried out more than 40 broadcast engagements in 2021 while the BTA generated more than 3,000 pieces of media coverage. His high profile helped a struggling sector draw hope that at least someone was batting on its behalf. "Supported by an incredibly hard-working team, he has developed a voice for business travel among government corridors, with tireless lobbying and influencing resulting in far better outcomes than many feared," said one Hotlist panellist.

Wratten became a familiar face on the news to advocate providing businesses the necessary financial support to get them flying once again. He suggested doing so through implementing strict policies of quarantine and testing, along with creating air corridors. Wratten believed that it was more important to involve the U.K. government by having the ministry of transport create a global travel task force that surveyed business travelers and have it delivered to the prime minister. In addition, under Wratten’s leadership, the BTA was able to acquire support for corporate travel workers who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

The Business Travel Association’s chief executive has been one of the industry’s most visible figureheads throughout the coronavirus pandemic and set in motion a series of significant initiatives. Wratten has frequently conveyed the struggles of the business travel industry through mainstream media channels but also earned the ear of the government. He was influential in establishing the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Business Travel, while he and his team launched the BTA Cares initiative to offer advice, training and recruitment opportunities for those out of work. He has been candid about the industry’s plight – not least that of his TMC members – and, in partnership with Nina & Pinta, increased the volume around the reform of TMC remuneration models. Wratten has shown tremendous leadership through this difficult time and has ensured our industry’s voice has been and will continue to be heard.
