Biggest red flag for new businesses? 🚩 Assuming or even worse.. being told that a new website is going to make you sales! Yes having an easy to navigate and convert website will absolutely assist in conversions but assuming that sales will flood in when you launch a shiny new website is a massive lie. That’s like having a shiny new car without putting petrol in it.. it’s not going to drive anywhere! Same method applies to marketing = 🏎️ You need a strategy & forecast on how you’re going to get traffic to your website through different channels! If you want to drive X in revenue then work it backwards to how much traffic you need to generate based on your average order value and estimated conversion! Chances are your budgests will likely be limited so remember: Don’t try and do it all at once. Slow and steady wins the race 💸

Here’s a question…. Why do so many SME businesses (big and small) tend to not hold Marketing Professionals in the same regard as Accountants and HR etc? Or marketing in general. What I mean is, the more businesses I talk to a common theme has appeared. A lot of businesses see marketing as ‘something I can do myself when I have time’ or ‘we can hire an apprentice for a fraction of the cost and they do other things to’. This is mad. Especially when the businesses that are ‘winning’ clearly have their marketing in check. They commonly: - Have a strong and consistent brand message - Know their target audience - Run multiple strategies at any one time - Allocate a realistic budget to marketing for growth - Test and measure results to see what works - Have a marketing team and utilise external support - Constantly seek to improve the customer journey - Understand that marketing is the key to everything else in the business as it helps generate leads that turn into sales and generate cash. (👆it’s impossible to do all this on your own or via an apprentice and do it well) The businesses that don’t prioritise marketing, don’t have an issue retaining their Accountant or HR guys but for some reason think twice about marketing. Why?? And by Marketing Professional I mean, qualified by qualification or time served with years of experience and proven results. #marketing #debate #research

'Marketing secrets of the pub lunch' There are plenty of things that separate good marketing copy from bad. But one that’s often overlooked is confidence. When you’ve got it, you write better. A bit of confidence helps you run with stuff that’s personal to you and what you’re selling. And when you do that, it singles you out - as you avoid bland, cliché-filled copy. As ever, examples are better than my blabbering, so consider this: On holiday a while back, as we pootled around the Suffolk countryside in the rain, I saw a couple of pub chalkboards advertising lunch. One said this: ‘We cook the finest ingredients and are passionate about our food and our service.” Zero confidence – two whopping clichés and nothing to set them apart from anyone else. The other said this: ‘Pop in for one of Val’s famous homemade pies – you’re lucky, you’ve caught her on a good day!’ Now (if I hadn’t already stuffed my face with fish and chips) which pub would I choose? The second, of course – the copy singles the place out, as you’re not gonna get Val’s homemade pie anywhere else. Especially as it’s one of her good days (nice bit of FOMO). And it promises charm and personality, as opposed to the grim functionality of a place that’s ‘passionate about food’. You see, when you write with confidence you have the guts to say things that others don’t.
