It is becoming clearer by the day that as an industry there is a growing disconnect with our customers. Put simply we are over supplying products that have low demand and under supplying products with high demand. Normally one would take action to match supply with demand but due to the ZEV mandate manufacturers are now ratio led rather than demand led. Anecdotally I am hearing a plethora of stories from multiple sources that car manufacturers are actively… ❗️Penalising dealers for missing mix ratios, ❗️Restricting the supply of ICE to fleet customers ❗️Refusing to take retail orders for ICE products. This is a direct result of the ZEV mandate (£15k) fine that manufacturers must pay for missing the EV to ICE sales ratio. I fear that the situation will worsen over the coming months. I think we will see many car manufacturer’s refusing to supply ICE vehicles in q4. Our industry has shaken off its “Arthur Daly” image and moved forward significantly in the last 10 years. The latest institute of customer service UK CSI survey results reinforce this notion with Automotive delivering a comparable score to the sectors that consumers rate highly (retail, banking, tourism and leisure ) We are in real danger of undermining our commitment to become customer centric and pursuing our own agenda. EVs are a fantastic proposition for many but it is currently not the right solution for everyone. #not4EVery1 Companies that fail to meet the needs of the people that they serve quickly find themselves in financial difficulty ! I think there is a need for a radical rethink about how all of the stakeholders can work together to create a compelling proposition that aligns demand with the net zero legislation.
