The UK general elections on July 4 will see thousands of Hong Kongers, eligible to vote through the BNO visa program, participating in the democratic process. In towns like Sutton and Wokingham, where many Hong Kongers reside, candidates are addressing their community's concerns and needs. Lucy Demery, a Conservative candidate for Wokingham, who has lived in Hong Kong for 17 years and once joined peaceful protests against the strict rule of the Chinese Communist Party, emphasized her commitment to the safety and integration of Hong Kongers. Hersh Thaker, Labour Party candidate for Carshalton and Wallington, acknowledged the significant contributions of Hong Kong migrants to the UK. Bobby Dean, Liberal Democrats candidate for the same constituency, stressed the importance of taking a firm stance on issues involving China. Tom Drummond, Conservative candidate for Sutton and Cheam, highlighted the need to address expensive tuition fees and rebuild trust. "With a shift away from disproportionately expecting state governments to power growth, the focus must now be on social welfare and stability." No, the focus should and always have been about sustainable economic growth. You can't tax your way to sustainability, but you have to grow the pie (oh god, I sound so Liz Truss). So will transferring more funds from their own regions help them deliver stability? Negligibly - here's why. Those regional officials that are in Tier 1,2 cities and developed provinces have the depth and breadth of experience in a whole slew of industries - while those that are in decline and more in the hinterland will find it hard to find a niche. And #cantwalkandchewgum, that is why so many provinces and Tier 3-4 cities copy what the Tier 1 does and fail. Because it is not just what to do, but whether the economy can afford, can sustain and develop its own (positive) trajectory. Anyway, the clear, present and urgent problem is debt - and until the reforms comes into effect; they (the more indebted provinces with high debt to GDP ratios) need cash now.

Yesterday a young Chinese professional in her mid-20s asked me: “Sally: How do you face rejection? I am always worried about being rejected by my clients, colleagues and bosses at work.” Without thinking twice, my immediate response was: “To live with it!” 🙄 It doesn’t mean I like rejection; but on reflection, I have been rejected in my life and at work so so many times… Rejected by my dream schools. Rejected by my best friends. Rejected by my dream boyfriends. Rejected by my dream jobs. Rejected by my dream clients. Rejected by people I love for “no reason”. Rejected by people I don’t even know. 🤷‍♀️ But the key is: ♥️ Accept the rejection, the emotions that come with it. ♥️ But try not to dwell on it. Try not to make it personal. ♥️ Instead, ask yourself: What’s it teaching me here? What’s the best alternative option? As the saying goes, the *BEST* is yet to come; and it’s often true. Sometimes it is even a blessing in disguise to be rejected and not to get what you wanted… So don’t worry about rejection. Treat it as part of life experience. (If we always get what we want, life will probably become too easy and too boring! 😱) How do you face rejection? Each experience makes us truly whole.
