Your skills can change lives and whole industries, but many get bogged down in developing stuff that only changes their company's profits. Don't be a silly sausage and waste your talent. Instead, work for a 1000-person actuarial consultancy helping the government and over half the UK’s top 100 companies to answer the big questions across industries like health, football, pensions and insurance. Upon joining their 14-person web team, your first project will be a complete rewrite of an energy trading and trend prediction platform using the latest Vue version, which will help the UK and the world plot a greener future and achieve the ambitious Paris Agreement target of net zero by 2050, which over 140 countries set in 2016. After that, you'll work across multiple teams and industries on a mix of greenfield projects with many new ideas and tools, including intelligently incorporating AI into all their current tools and tech. They always use the latest technology, currently Vue 3.0 / Typescript, but they’ll move to Vue as soon as possible. On Monday I asked question for graduates about making themselves stand out. What about the equivalent but for pensions actuaries 10-15 years into their career? Here’s the scenario: Someone progressed really well for the first 5/6/7 years. They qualified, went from doing->checking->reviewing and are very capable in a trustee consulting team. Since then, they’ve still been gaining more experience in terms of years, but the skills they are using and the nature of the role feels like it’s evolving less each year. They are perhaps number 2 to the Scheme Actuary on a few clients, doing a good job, but not necessarily progressing upwards in the same way that they used to and feeling a bit less excited & challenged. What sort of things should they be thinking about when it comes to adding skills/gaining new experience/taking on different responsibilities or even making themselves more attractive to other employers to help them regain a sense of progression either internally or externally? #pensions #actuaries #actuarial #careers #somethingdifferent

Thinking of exploring the market in Q4 this year? Please do drop me a message for a confidential exploratory chat. Q4 (from my view) always seems like a good time to see what is available in the general insurance actuarial market. Processes tend to move quickly, especially compared to Q3 with summer & school holidays. If you are on a 1 month or 3 month notice you'll be able to get a start date confirmed for early 2025. From a financial standpoint it will help maximise your 2025 bonus paid in 2026 due to the calendar year running from January-December. There is also always plenty of opportunity in the market, with companies looking to get the headcount confirmed and hiring completed before the end of the year. Happy to have a chat.
