There were 347 cyber incidents reported in the education and childcare sector in 2023, a BBC report revealed. It represented a 55% increase on 2022.

The UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2024 reveals that half of UK businesses and two-thirds of charities experienced cyber incidents or data breaches in the past year, marking an increase compared to the previous year’s figures. Large businesses were most affected, with 74% reporting breaches, followed by medium-sized (70%) and small businesses (58%). It's very concerning to read that 64% of UK Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) who were surveyed by Absolute Security think that the UK has a poor cyber resilience strategy, as has been reported in Verdict. 🖥 Any effort to enhance the UK's cyber resilience must prioritise bringing our cybersecurity laws into 21st century. The next government should focus on this to keep Britain safe in today’s digital world. 🛡 We are urging the next government to introduce a 'statutory defence' as part of reform to the outdated Computer Misuse Act 1990. This would allow cyber security professionals to operate without one hand tied behind their backs and boost our nation’s cyber security industry. 📈 Updating the Act would also unlock the growth potential of the already successful British tech industry. The enhanced economic opportunities of the sector post-reform are significant – potential increased revenues are as high as £2.4 billion each year. Launched today, Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2024 from DSIT, which provides an excellent insight into the current state of skills within the cyber security workforce. However, I'm saddened to read that the number of women in the sector remains at just 17%. And whilst the number of cyber security graduates has increased, demonstrating improvements in raising awareness of cyber security as a career path, the number of people identifying as female is just 14% at undergraduate level. This is why schemes such as #CyberFirst are so important, encouraging girls to try their hands at cyber security challenges in a supported environment and hopefully generating an interest in the subject earlier on. It's also vital that we keep on encouraging career changers to consider cyber security, as they bring with them a wealth of transferrable skills that can be invaluable in managing risk, handling incidents and adding diversity of thought to cyber security discussions. It's particularly frustrating on a day when I've chaired a really insightful panel at the Mastering Diversity conference, hearing from senior people working hard to improve diversity in their organisations. I really hope that between us all, we can facilitate a change in this statistic over the next few years. https://lnkd.in/er3JCau2
