🙌 What a brilliant new report from the Building Back Britain Commission! This report advocates a new approach to boosting productivity, looking towards place-based enablers of leading healthy, productive lives, rather than more traditional indicators. The Centre for the South works to drive more informed place-based decision-making for our region. Our previous work with New Local conducting stakeholder mapping to identify place-based challenges in the central South may provide valuable input to local reflection on these issues.
Building Back Britain Commission, a group of the UK’s most high profile businesses chaired by Claire Ainsley, has published a ‘Productivity Potential Index’ highlighting 146 local areas where targeted practical changes could deliver economic growth and a much-needed revival of UK productivity. The research, carried out by WPI Strategy finds that action to deliver just a 1% boost in productivity across 146 English local authorities that are currently ‘middling’ in productivity terms could deliver an extra £16 billion of additional economic value each year, or £82 billion over this Parliament. The data found stark regional inequalities in performance across all five pillars - which represent issues already being targeted by the new government for policy reform or funding. The report finds that making improvements on these specific pillars in the 146 ‘middling’ local authorities will yield significant productivity gains. The Commission will be using the research to consult widely on what policy and regulatory changes could help communities unlock their productivity potential.
