🙌 What a brilliant new report from the Building Back Britain Commission! This report advocates a new approach to boosting productivity, looking towards place-based enablers of leading healthy, productive lives, rather than more traditional indicators. The Centre for the South works to drive more informed place-based decision-making for our region. Our previous work with New Local conducting stakeholder mapping to identify place-based challenges in the central South may provide valuable input to local reflection on these issues.

WPI Strategy colleagues and members of the Building Back Britain Commission were delighted to present the findings of our recent analysis into the productivity potential of every local area in England to Labour’s Growth Group of MPs last night in Parliament. The Commission will now be consulting extensively to set out a detailed and practical policy roadmap to help drive private investment across the country. WPI Strategy have today published new economic analysis into the productivity potential of every local area in the country with the Building Back Britain Commission publishing its first report. The report finds that action to deliver just a 1% boost in productivity across 146 English local authorities that are currently ‘middling’ in productivity terms could deliver an extra £16 billion of additional economic value each year, or £82 billion over this Parliament. The Building Back Britain Commission is an independent group of businesses made up of Vodafone UK, London Gatwick, Haleon, Mastercard, Microsoft UK, Churchill Living Ltd, NHBC, Pennon Group Plc, Pension Insurance Corporation plc and British Land. Claire Ainsley, chair of the Commission and former Director of Policy to Keir Starmer: "The government’s primary mission for the UK to grow its economy in places right across the country is ambitious but possible. But we must tackle the biggest barrier to growth which is poor productivity. That means better targeting of existing public funds as well as creating a smarter and pro growth regulatory system that unlocks private investment." New analysis by the Building Back Britain Commission, an independent industry group chaired by Claire Ainsley reveals the ‘Productivity Potential’ of every local authority in England. Using thousands of official data points, the analysis - conducted by WPI Strategy - seeks to understand the underlying barriers which are holding back productivity. From healthcare accessibility, housing availability, local public transport connectivity and educational outcomes to full fibre and 5G accessibility as well as the ability of businesses to use technology effectively, the research reveals that every community in England has productivity challenges and the foundations to grow.
